Vice President JD Vance said at an event on a college campus this week that he wants to see his wife, second lady Usha Vance, who is the child of Hindu Indian immigrants, convert to Christianity.
The vice president was speaking at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi Oct. 29 that also included Erika Kirk, the widow of Vance's late friend, Charlie Kirk. A member of the audience, who said she is an immigrant, asked JD Vance critical questions about his call to reduce legal immigration into the U.S. and how he is teaching his kids "not to keep your religion ahead of their mother's religion."
JD Vance, who is considered a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028, said his wife grew up in a Hindu family that wasn't particularly religious, and that the two were both agnostics or atheists when they met each other. Usha Vance's parents immigrated to the United States from India. JD Vance converted to Catholicism after his marriage, and was baptized in 2019.
"Do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church? Yeah, I honestly, I do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way," Vance said.
"But if she doesn't, then God says, 'Everybody has free will,' and so that doesn't cause a problem for me. That's something you work out with your friends, with your family, with the person that you love," he added.

And I hope she stands up to him and doesn't. Most people I know who are culturally Hindu do NOT convert. Usha is looking more and more unhappy and I wish she' d give John David Bowman-Hamel-Vance the boot!

(6,445 posts)What an absolutely spineless tool. He's seeing the way all the other racists in his party are bashing Ramaswamy and Kash Patel. And of course he doesn't push back on it. Instead he cowers and does what they want.

(54,882 posts)Convert because my religion is right and yours is wrong.
Convert because when we die, I will go to Heaven and you won't.
Convert because our children and I want you to be the same as us.
Convert because I'm the head of the family.
Convert because you make me feel uncomfortable.
Convert because it will help me in 2028.

(151,210 posts)and hook up with Erika there. Live sucks, I guess. I suppose he could get his current wife detained and exported by the ICE goons, though.
Looks like Vance is going to go through some things, maybe...

(8,108 posts)Catholics are divorced at the same rate as everyone else. The teachings of the Pope are routinely ignored - indeed, the prior Pope was routinely attacked as too far left by various so-called Catholic pundits. Vance is not only pro-death penalty contrary to any possible reading of Catholic doctrine, he's also pro blowing people out of the water without trial or investigation, which makes even the usual dodges of jus ad bellum a total joke. US Catholics, probably since the 1980s, have been essentially Protestant / Calvinist evangelicals (like most of the other Christian denominations here). Not only is US Catholicism unrecognizable to most Catholics abroad, it's not even recognizable to US Catholics from the 1970s.

(8,108 posts)And we're to believe they're being brought up in the Catholic church when his wife wants no part of it?
Agreed. His Catholicism itself seems craven and disconnected. His rush to throw his wife under the bus is really a shocking testament to his character.

(14,344 posts)(That's the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia). I don't like to say bad things about my fellow Orthodox, but ROCOR is known to be attracting a lot of reich-wing men lately, which I find very sad. It would be right (reich?) up his alley. But so is Opus Dei. They are VERY reich-wing.

(13,953 posts)If Usha Vance decides to stay Hindu or become Christian, that's up to her. If we read the OP, Vance is not trying to make his wife become part of his religion. If he did, then there would be a case against what he said.
I think we're all agreed as liberals (who consider ourselves left of center), that forcing one's religious views on another is unacceptable and groups that do it are our adversaries, not our friends.

(8,886 posts)Indians/Hindus have many many centuries of their own proud culture and religion, and consider their world far superior to anything the US can offer.
Its the height of arrogance to issue such a statement when hes discussing her and her family who have their own history of which theyre rightfully entitled to take pride in without this kind of thinly veiled pressure
