Holly Otterbein: Is anti-AI socialism the future of the Democratic Party?

Is anti-AI socialism the future of the Democratic Party?

Top Mamdani adviser Morris Katz told me that at a time of "historic income inequality and social upheaval, every candidate should be embracing an aggressive vision" on AI.

"Whichever candidates and party are able to define themselves as the best line of defense against this impending crisis will be both on the right side of history and strongly positioned electorally."

Check out @JimVandeHei & @mikeallen's column.

Behind the Curtain: Anti-AI socialist scenario
Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen

Two unfolding forces will shape significantly the short-term future of the Democratic Party, officials tell us:

The popularity of socialist candidates and ideas, especially among grassroots Democrats.

AI increasing energy costs, joblessness and inequality.

Why it matters: Both of these trends are accelerating and spilling into national politics in high-profile ways.

I'm not sure I'd say the timing is perfect to make it a centerpiece of a campaign because there's not QUITE enough AZJonnie Nov 2025 #1
You're underestimating how much most people hate AI. highplainsdem Nov 2025 #6

Not so much anti socialist as just plain pro democracy tirebiter Nov 2025 #3
Not "anti-socialism." What she's talking about is anti-AI and pro-socialism. highplainsdem Nov 2025 #4
When will DSA be pro democracy? And drop their anti NATO stance? tirebiter Nov 2025 #5

general awareness of how fucked we're all going to be from AI. However, that time will be coming soon, and it's definitely not too early for prominent Democrats to start carving out this position generally. There may indeed come a day when having done so in the past pays dividends for our candidates, but it's not going to do that much to get someone elected right at this moment, put it like that. Too many people still perceive it as something 'neat' and 'fun' that is useful to their daily lives. Once the terrible ramifications become more clear, and generally known, it will be good for our candidates to be able to point back and say "I've been warning about this for years, and here's the common-sense list of controls I've been, and continue to advocate for" type of thing.

It may take a full FAFO cycle for people’s awareness of the evils of AI to enter most folks consciousness, but once it does, Dems better be in position to act.
