Trump's Gatsby party wasn't just about being a rich SOB. Trump thought he looked like Redford. The NYT had told him so.

Despite Redford's political opposition to Trump, Trump still praised him as "the hottest" - which probably had everything to do with this brain-dead NYT profile in November 1976:

https://www.nytimes.com/1976/11/01/archives/donald-trump-real-estate-promoter-builds-image-as-he-buys-buildings.html

He is tall, lean and blond, with dazzling white teeth, and he looks ever so much like Robert Redford. He rides around town in a chauffeured silver Cadillac with his initials, DJT, on the plates. He dates slinky fashion models, belongs to the most elegant clubs and, at only 30 years of age, estimates that he is worth “more than $200 million.”

Mango Mussolini probably has that framed.

If there was one Robert Redford role Trump would have identified with, it was Gatsby. Last night Trump was starring in his own Gatsby movie at his shitty Palm Beach club, imagining he was "the hottest."

See this news article on how Trump demanded to be filmed for a cameo in an Oliver Stone movie in 2010 - a cameo the filmmaker dropped:

https://www.newsweek.com/here-are-absurd-instructions-putting-donald-trump-your-movie-509810

The email reveals Trump's obsession with his physical appearance. It requests that the Donald be filmed under "warm golden lighting" to accentuate his "warm golden" skin and "defined jaw-line." It also instructs the cinematographer to shoot Trump "front face to camera," while avoiding his left hair part. Trump also requested his own monitor so he could see himself after being shot, a request the crew found ridiculous.

"It was absolutely absurd," says Kopeloff, who says he isn't speaking on behalf of anyone else involved. "You can look and see the movies I've made. [I've worked with] all these movie actors. Never, ever, have I seen anything like this. Not from the biggest movie stars in the world... It was like you're going back into the 1940s, and you're getting a note from the head of the studio." (Making filming even more difficult, Trump's team reportedly made the hairdressers sign a contract that they wouldn't touch the mogul's hair—despite the fact that the scene took place in a barbershop.)

with a cast and soundtrack full of artists who don’t support Trump, and probably also some inspiration from the musical which has been a big hit on Broadway, but declined to schedule any shows at the Trumpery Center on its upcoming tour.

They simply cannot stop themselves from glomming on to art and popular culture that rejects them.

Trump is convinced he’s a mix of all the best parts of Winston Churchill and Robert Redford.

But that line “a little party never killed nobody” is 100% a song from the Luhrmann movie, and I’m suggesting that someone—either the person who initially pitched the concept or the person who did the actual work of planning the party—was drawing on the movie and a popular Broadway show for their ideas.

Trump probably bought dozens of copies of that paper. Would never have forgotten it.

Some of the reports on Trump praising Redford as "great" and "the hottest" after Redford died seemed surprised Trump would have praised him. But it's possible Trump never got a compliment he liked more than that comparison to Redford, so he was unlikely to run him down.

Outside of a similar hairstyle, that doughy creep with hairy caterpillar eyebrows NEVER resembled Robert Redford in any way, shape, or form. Good Gawd.

Here is what Fitzgerald had to say:

...They were careless people... they smashed up things & creatures & then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, & let other people clean up the mess they had made...

From The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
