Yesterday, every block in a Chicago neighborhood came together - people keeping watch and cars blocking entrances to keep everyone safe from ICE raids while trick-or-treating.

(3,846 posts)It was a deliberate attempt to stick it to blue districts in the Chicago area. Going to make us look like the cowards we are? We'll ruin your trick or treating. Because we can. Or we think we can, anyway. Unless you organize and continue making us look like the cowards we are, in which case the joke's on us, I guess.

(3,846 posts)There were almost as many adults out with the kids trick-or-treating in our neighborhood.
Parents volunteered to be at the schools when students were dismissed.
And a local school with a large number of Latinx students put out a call for candy. The kids in that area didn't go out last night, so donations are pouring in so the teachers can make goodie bags.

(12,590 posts)Communities and neighborhoods are joining together in protective groupings is a sign of real hope. Stronger together, as they say.
I also read today that several local restaurants will be offering discounts and free meals (particularly for kids) to SNAP recipients, that churches and food banks are working like crazy to keep shelves adequately stocked and even the large chain grocery stores are offering food discounts to those with SNAP IDs.
The lights haven't gone out yet despite the Administration's cruel, inhumane agenda.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
