I don't know, it just doesn't seem to me like this is in keeping with the spirit of Halloween. I want more kids to come!

Happy Halloween, I guess?

(6,873 posts)My neighborhood is a trick-or-treatet's paradise: a safe and pleasant neighborhood with many houses, close together. We have nice wide sidewalks, and almost every household offers treats
We get 300 to 400 hundred kids coming to our door, and I'd guess only about half of them are from our immediate neighborhood. Many of the others, I would guess, are from less-advantaged neighborhoods far away. I sure feel honored that they like coming to my door. More than anything else, it's what makes Halloween happy for me.

(997 posts)I moved to a gated community for a reason. Outsiders are not allowed in the other 364 days of the year and Halloween is no exception.

(997 posts)I really enjoy living in a gated community with 24-hour manned security. I feel very safe here.
I close on the home this Monday

(997 posts)Dureing Hurricane Ian, we had a bridge destroyed which meant many people could not get to their homes, requiring the opening of a unsecured gate at the back of the neighborhood.
We experienced stolen cars, stolen bikes, home burglaries and home invasions.
But thanks for you cute little question

(1,183 posts)My car was hit 10 years ago on Halloween. Now it seems more quiet. Our immediate area is higher end so people use to drive in and line the streets. Along with this came a lot of petty theft. So I kinda get this.

(150,888 posts)My wife and I miss trick or treaters. Our current location, a small townhome development, just isn't attractive to Halloween visitors. We'd love to have them. At our previous house, we averaged about 200 kids each Halloween trooping up to our front door. We handed out full-sized candy bars, so our house was very popular. All the children, who represented the full spectrum of ethnicities in St. Paul, MN, were polite, happy, and were a joy to watch.
We don't get kids any longer. We're just not on a route that would bring children to our door. More's the pity.
We miss them.

(13,810 posts)It's possible this HOA is near locations that are underserved by law enforcement. If there are no tough police forces nearby, then you have to worry, not about children, but about teens ruining Halloween for everybody by showing up.
Also, if you have people driving in from surrounding areas, that increases traffic in the neighborhood exactly at the time children are roaming the streets. I really can't believe anyone who has the least particle of empathy would endanger the safety of the neighborhood children by encouraging drive-ins. All in the service of eating too much sugar.
Finally, as a Democrat and liberal, I respect democracy. I'm sure the HOA policy represents the voted will of the neighborhood. The neighborhood owes no one any explanation. Their vote is their voice. Their voice is their will. Done.
