Jennifer Lawrence appeared on The Interview podcast from The New York Times as part of her Die My Love press tour and got honest about her newfound resistance to talking to the press about politics. The Oscar winner was outspoken against Donald Trump during his first administration as U.S. president, notably writing an op-ed after Election Day in which she declared that Trumps victory meant the only people that feel safe [in America], that their rights are recognized and respected, are white men.
When asked by The Interview host Lulu Garcia-Navarro about her thoughts on speaking out now regarding Trump and politics, Lawrence answered: I dont really know if I should. The first Trump administration was so wild and just how can we let this stand? I felt like I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But as weve learned, election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for. So then what am I doing? Im just sharing my opinion on something thats going to add fuel to a fire thats ripping the country apart. We are so divided.
I think Im in a complicated recalibration because Im also an artist, Lawrence continued. With this temperature and the way things can turn out, I dont want to start turning people off to films and to art that could change consciousness or change the world because they dont like my political opinions. I want to protect my craft so that you can still get lost in what Im doing. And if I cant say something thats going to speak to some kind of peace or lowering the temperature or some sort of solution, I dont want to be a part of the problem. I dont want to make the problem worse You watch these actors faces who have had incredible careers and made incredible contributions and then one half of the internet doesnt want to see their face anymore. I get so upset for those people and it feels so wrong.

(18,318 posts)Texas isnt an isolated state. Every state has issues with mental illness.

(10,860 posts)to the point that it is almost not recognizable. It is pretty obvious that Texas is not unique but being such a large state it's impact is significant. Actually the poster child for just about everything wrong with our country these days.

(18,318 posts)Texas changed significantly during the Gov Richards and shrub Bush and Karl Rove and his ugly whisper campaign about Ann being a lesbian.
There is a lot of ugliness in Texas. Some of it mental and non thinking people. They vote how their preachers tell them to vote and well we all know how extreme those preachers are.

The hatred and bile are accomplishing absolutely nothing other than generating even more hatred and divide.
I generally just ignore anything that celebrities say for the very reasons she stated. But in this case, I applaud her for not just telling the truth, but for telling ALL of the truth. We would be wise to openly consider her words and what they mean.

(1,525 posts)And there maybe repercussions to your career by sharing your beliefs. I believe thats what she realizes. Their status can add a voice to charitable causes, but frankly nobody cares about their politics. I dont see any positive unless you only exercise your craft to half the population.

(27,639 posts)Sorry, but no. Once we get to the point where prominent people have to refrain from saying things critical of the governing regime for fear of having their careers ended, fascism has well and truly won.

(16,872 posts)I'm not interested hegemonic movies that push the Christian status quo. I think what she is really saying here is that the commentary she wants to make is in her art and that this may influence some people. And she is right - movies were a way out of the small town I grew up in if even just in my mind. They helped me understand there are other ways to look at the world. If actors are shoved to the sidelines againMcCarthy style by this government, they stand to lose their careers like so many did before. And I would further argue that it's not the place of government to create those repercussions., which is the biggest concern at the moment.

(5,132 posts)Celebrity is a form of power and with it comes the responsibility to be a good role model to the people who look up to or might otherwise be influenced by you.
I give credit to people who use their celebrity to make a positive difference in the world. But I don't think it should be an expectation. If someone wants to be an artist and keep their private life (including their political beliefs) private, they should have that right.
The issue as much as anything is "journalists" whose response to something like Gaza is "let's find out what Taylor Swift thinks about this" because they know that will generate more clicks than digging into the facts and interviewing potentially unphotogenic and non-famous people about their lived experience.
And frankly, the general public who would rather click on the former than the latter.

for women politicians and for women in the entertainment industry. Threats of death, and threats of assault to their children and spouses.
How comfortable in their white skins do you think Gabby Giffords and Nancy Pelosi are these days?

Artists are always targeted by fascist regimes and were going to see some of them jailed for speaking out soon.
Everyone has to make their own decisions, but they might even come for DU at some point too to hold people accountable for what they post here.

(93,614 posts)I don't think they should all be silent but there are times it's better to not get attention for something like during election time.
It would probably have been better if the Democratic Convention last year didn't have so many celebrities . There might be certain celebs which have more influence . And the reality is people get more angry at women and minority celebs saying things than white men .
But it also depends on the specific audience and there might be certain celebs that appeal more to certain types of people.

(151,259 posts)I can't blame them if they hesitate to take political stands or criticize political figures. My understanding is that death threats are a commonplace thing for anyone in the public eye who is in the news frequently. How much should they ignore?
And Jennifer Lawrence is correct that her political influence is small. I know that I don't pay much attention to celebrities when it comes to political issues. Why should I?
I think we should leave people like her to make their own decisions. We don't own them, and they don't owe us.
