(8,887 posts)When people who feel their economic situation is strong theyll buy a lot of name brand products - Campbells soup vs the store brand for example.
When people believe their economic situation is bad, generic and inferior quality store brands get subbed in.
Its called the measure of inferior goods.
Right now many economists are watching that indicator since the govt bureau of statistics is compromised. Right now folks have stopped buying inferior and name brands altogether on non-essentials like ice cream, yogurt, cosmetics etc. So not just indicating a recession but a deep recession is bearing down.

(1,856 posts)staples for 30 years. The only non store brand I buy are Hellmans mayo, Nabisco Saltines and Martins potato bread/rolls.
Most store brands are made by the same companies as the branded products.
