Love the way Democrats are taunting republicans to nuke the filibuster

.....betting that republicans will likely be loath to end the filibuster and just surrender the budget in some future Democratic majority to a simple majority of their opposition.

Rep. Swalwell's not letting them forget they're responsible for the government shutdown continuing.

Rep. Eric Swalwell @RepSwalwell · Oct 31
Trump admits he is in fact in charge of the White House, Senate, and House and therefore is responsible for the government being closed. https://x.com/andrewdesideri

Thune defying Trump’s order to nuke the filibuster shows how weak Trump has become. He chickens out on tariffs and now is getting rolled by his own Senate.

I think they are very, very afraid of being held 100% responsible for implementing the MAGA Murder Budget -- the most despised bill in my memory, and perhaps the most despised bill ever.

Trumpublicans are going to have a hell of a time getting appropriation bills that implement the abominable bill through their own conference, much less get the 60 votes needed to put those bills to a vote.

But they are loathe to get rid of the filibuster. They either want to be able to continue to blame Democrats when their appropriation bills stall. Or if they do manage to get any passed, they want to be able to say "if it were that bad, wouldn't the Democrats have stopped it?"

I also believe they are refusing to cave on the subsidies because it will set a precedent of doing their jobs and actually working with the minority party.

There is a reason that a functional majority party doesn't shove abominations like the MAGA Murder Budget down the throats of the minority. Sane members know that they will need the minority to IMPLEMENT provisions in an actual budget.

I think, one way or the other, they are going to be in chaos as the months go on. If they keep the filibuster, at best, they'll end up with a series of CR's funding at the current levels (each time having to cave on a new Democratic condition) and then be voted out.

If they get rid of the filibuster, they'll be unable to get their act together on key appropriation bills, pass a series of CR's on their own, and be voted out with 100% of the blame for whatever mess Trump makes.

Who knows. Thune may actually be looking to keep the filibuster so that, ultimately, the Democrats help them save themselves from themselves.

We refuse to be accomplices to more than doubling Obamacare premiums.

We refuse to be accomplices to the Republican's continued failure to do anything to stop the administration from illegally withholding funds we've appropriated.

We refuse to be accomplices in the illegal firings.

We refuse to be accomplices to the damage this majority Republican congress is allowing this lawless administration to do.

Question: But isn't the shutdown hurting people. Aren't YOU hurting people?

Yes. The shutdown is hurting people. But this administration has abused it's power and done far, far more damage to this nation, to our reputation, to our neighbors, to disaster victims in blue states. They are even committing war crimes in our names as they blow up boats at will.

We seek two incredibly simple, reasonable, and moral things.
1. To stop the Obamacare premiums from more than doubling.
2. To add provisions that assert the power of Congress to ensure the administration fulfill it's oath to carry out the laws passed by Congress. Doing this is what OUR OATH to protect the constitution demands. This is a moral imperative.

Without the first, millions of Americans will lose their health care and with that, our entire health care system is endangered.

Without the second, we have nothing but a lawless administration, abusing the unbelievable power of the Presidency, confident that the Congressional majority will ignore their oath and allow it to do anything it pleases.

We are in the minority. We are using the only leverage we have to accomplish these two simple, moral imperatives.

And the Republicans don't actually have to pay any attention to us. They can take the little bit of leverage we have away tomorrow. They can use the so-called "nuclear option" and get rid of the filibuster. And once they've done that, they can continue to allow this lawless president violate the constitution. They can allow Obamacare premiums to double.

But it will all be on them.

We will not be their accomplishes in dismantling our constitution democracy or further weakening the health care system we have, as flawed as it is.

It’s at least half of it. The other half is that they are the minority in the country and the know it.
