And I think thats why so many [Dominican] men in the community really believe a strong man like Trump is the solution to all our problems.
Sigh. A strong man like Trump, and if he wins the race for New Jersey governor, a strong man like Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, who not only has Trumps endorsement but shares many of the same views as him. (¡Dios nos libre!)

(15,462 posts)Unfortunately - it really is not. If not a majority or popular viewpoint - at least many coming from these regimes - are, at very least, quite familiar ...
(and then - look at the large numbers in this country - that are quite sold on the 'strongman' concept. yes? )

(5,545 posts)we have had a long history of authoritarianism. Probably the largest genicide in human history, the plantation economy of the South which actually propped up the entire US economy, one of the bloodiest labor struggles in the world, and toppling democratically elected governments around the world with such reckless abandon that even one of the most highly decorated Marine Generals wrote a pamphlet in disgust.
I think that the truth is just too uncomfortable for many people to deal with. Unfortunately ignoring a problem only allows it to grow.

(30,178 posts)It certainly contributed, but if were truly that powerful, they would have had ample money for the Confederacy. In fact, it was the industrialized North that had both the manufacturing and resources to sustain the conflict, which is often cited as a major contributing factor to the defeat of the Confederacy.
