Israeli military's ex-top lawyer arrested over leak of video allegedly showing Palestinian detainee abuse

The former top lawyer in the Israeli military has been arrested, as a political showdown deepens over the leaking of a video that allegedly shows severe abuse of a Palestinian detainee by Israeli soldiers.

Maj Gen Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned as the Military Advocate General of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) last week, saying that she took full responsibility for the leak.

On Sunday, the story took a darker turn when she was reported as missing, with police mounting an hours-long search for her on a beach north of Tel Aviv.

She was subsequently found alive and well, police said, but was then taken into custody.

The fallout from the leaked video is intensifying by the day.

Broadcast in August 2024 on an Israeli news channel, the footage shows reserve soldiers at the Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel taking aside a detainee, then surrounding him with riot shields to block visibility while he was allegedly beaten and stabbed in the rectum with a sharp object.

Pretty bad look for the IDF.

The idf are monsters, a normal person would not think to” stab the victim in the rectum”

It’s terrifying that these perverts are getting away with this kind of behavior and could visit the United States since Israel is a favored nation.

Remember, the IDF are like the US military used to be, all draftees basically. So you can't call them ALL monsters. Doubtless some are. But I think of my late Israeli friend Yitzhak, who was a mamber of the IDF, and his sons, who also were. Just as some American soldiers were monsters (remember Abu Ghraib?) some of the IDF probably are. But don't tar them all with the same brush.

5. All of them that surrounded this victim so he could be raped are monsters

What’s even scarier, these were reservists, not even full timers so the rapists walk among the everyday people so it’s normalized

It doesn’t matter if not all idf are monsters since non of them spoke out against the torture except the brave woman who is now jailed for having a conscious at all

that MOST of the IDF are reservists? Until you understand the structure of the Israeli military, don't label all of them as monsters. Here's the scoop---every Israeli. male or female, at the age of 18, is expected to serve a term in the military. I'm not sure if it's one or two years. After that, everybody is a reservist---until the age of 60. What do you think all the riots among the ultra-orthodox are about? They've been exempt until recently, but Netanyahu now wants them to serve too, instead of living off the government. Seems only fair, but they don't see it that way.

I was explaining to you how the IDF works. I was not defending them, FFS. I think you had better reread what I wrote again with a less prejudiced eye,.

Now can we have an end to this? She blew the whistle on them.. Didn't have anything to do with it though.

11. I imagine they're quoting directly from a report of some kind?

I mean, yeah, it definitely sounds like those terms would fit, but if the police report or whatnot uses the dry language, for the paper it's safer to use that verbiage I think. The UK makes it pretty easy to sue for libel, and I've noticed a reticence by them to editorialize any more than they have to in hard-news stories like this over the years.

Anyways, this is all disgusting!!!

the response in Israel.

Some IDF and Israeli's are monsters but far from all. There is a substantial negative uproar against the assaults by Israelis. Maj Gen Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi is brave woman of integrity.

It sounds just like something Shitler & Co would do. Or Putin, or Netanyahu. I'm just gonna leave that there.
