The only way to regain and retain our democracy is to put into the hands of the people

Our government, our democracy, has been, over the years, bought and paid for by the rich and corporate. Billions are spent every year by lobbyists, PACS, wealthy individuals, corporations and others in order to get the legislation and policies that are favorable to them. Tax breaks, reductions in the social safety net, the ever increasing march towards oligarchy and authoritarianism. All of the current problems in our government can be traced to one root cause, the vast influx of money into our politics and government. Democrats and Republicans both are afflicted with this problem, though the argument can be made that it is Republicans who have sold their soul moreso than Democrats, both parties have done so to one degree or another. This is killing our country, and literally killing our people.

Since money is the root cause, the eliminating it is the only logical solution. I propose that we adapt a Constitional amendment for publicly financed elections. A mere law would get reviewed and revised into meaninglessness, therefore it has to be an amendment. From dog catcher to President, local, state and national elections should be publicly financed. Each candidate or ballot measure would get X amount of cash and X amount of free air time and advertising, and X amount of time to run their campaign.

Furthermore we need to eliminate the lobbying industry. Over five billion dollars was spent last year alone on lobbying at the local, state and national levels. This too would require a Constitutional Amendment, combining the two would probably be too much. We would want no paid lobbyists contacting our lawmakers, no post term job offers for lawmakers, and no gifts of any kind.

Now here's the distasteful part, we would have to work across party lines in order to achieve these goals. Ordinary rank and file conservatives are as sick of the money infecting our government as we are. I live in a deep red state and yet when I talk to friends, neighbors and family, they all agree that we need to eliminate the money in the system. We need that kind of bipartisan public pressure to achieve this goal. And when there is a Republican who is in favor of these amendments, and a Democrat is opposed, hold our nose and vote for those who will vote for these amendments. Whatever damage that said Republican does, as long as they follow through and support and vote for these amendments, we can correct it later after the amendments are passed. For you see, study after study has shown that the American people, even now, are more liberal than our elections and government indicate. Once you put the fate of our country in the hands of the people they will do what is best for the people.

Frankly this is the only peaceful, nonviolent solution I see to solving our current problems. Otherwise the oligarchs are going to keep putting the screws to us, doing what is best for them and leaving the rest of us to rot and die. Eventually the resentment and discontent will build among the populace until it reaches a breaking point. Then it will be either a civil war or violent revolution, and nobody wants that.

1. I am not sure if We The People still want a democracy or not.

One third of Americans adore a psychopath fascist.
Another third don't give a damn.

I think both those numbers are overblown, I think most folks want a say in their government, they've just been beaten down all the monetary influence we've seen go into our government, especially since citizens united. Give them a chance at a true democracy, freed from monetary influence, aI think the vast majority would jump at it.

I don't have any data to support that viewpoint right now.
But I hope you are correct.

You begin by suggesting a Constitutional Amendment. Do you know how those are done? That will be the very first challenge for your extensive plan.

In the second place, Republicans are not like Democrats. If you think you can get the two parties to agree on anything at all, I have to question your knowledge of history.

8. Yes, I know how a Constitutional Amendment works, how they get passed, etc.

Please don't assume I'm ignorant.

And while we can't, at least for now, get the parties to work together, we can get the people to do so on these issues. Even some of the most conservative people out there are sick of the money infecting our politics, they want to get rid of it as much as you and I do. Get that kind of massive bipartisan public pressure going, the parties will follow.

It won't be easy, it will take time, but we can make it happen if we are willing to unite with our fellow citizens, conservative as they might be.

Oh, and Republicans have indeed worked many times with Democrats, check your history.

But only after the Nazis are gone...

I think it's naive to work in good faith with Nazis. 'Absolutely! you get half of Poland and I get the other half..."

6. It is currently impossible to envision ANY Constitutional Amendment passing...for ANYTHING.

The way our government has been co-opted and broken, it is no longer functional at a very fundamental level.

The Legislature has been gerrymandered into inaction and futility.
The Executive has been turned into a sloppy dictatorship of graft and theft and ideological purity hacks.
The Judicial was stolen and converted into a kangaroo court/rubber stamp for the 'Unitary Executive'.

To amend the U.S. Constitution, an amendment must be proposed, typically by a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate (or by a national convention called for by two-thirds of state legislatures).
Once proposed, it must be ratified by three-fourths of the states (38 of 50).

This is an impossible barrier to repairing the Constitution or the First American Republic (1789 - 2024). In case you're wondering, you live in the First American Dictatorship (2024-2025) right now.

We cannot even get a filibuster-proof bill passed to keep people from starving or dying or being sentenced to poverty via medical extortion. There was 90% support for tightening gun laws after Sandy Hook...and yet, NOTHING CHANGED long term and thousands more have been shot and killed since then.

The current system has been rendered moot. It is time for a second American Republic and that may or may not include a single, contiguous body on the North American continent any longer. A partitioning without Civil War may be the best possible outcome because at least then, the Neo-confederates can be bankrupted and set off on their own to pray away diseases and wonder why they have been foresaken, while the rest of us can go on to a new Constitution, fix the egregious attacks of the last 60 years and move once again towards establishing a more perfect union.

I don't want MAGA involved, or as fellow citizens. They openly profess hate and I will given them indifference. They can go away and when their hideous policies kill them by the millions, I will simply say "we gave you what you wanted" and turn my back on the suffering of their children and aged and weak. It is a shame those people will have to die, but it is their choice now.
