...but I always find the importance placed on the New York City mayoral elections heavily overstated.
Yes, it is the largest city in the country.
Yes, it has a population that is greater than at least 32 states.
Yes, it is the center of the nation's media and industry.
But in the end, it's still just a local, municipal election. Riding on heavily municipal issues and themes. If I lived in New York City, I'm sure I would be concerned about a lot of it.
But I don't live in New York City, and the majority of Americans don't live in New York City, so all the national coverage on the NYC mayoral elections is just a bit superfluous.
But every cycle, without fail, we've been told that the NYC mayoral race may have national implications. And that the winner of the race could automatically be in the running for future presidential implications.
And every cycle, without fail, the race has produced individuals who have ultimately come off as, well, jokes.
The one they tried to foist upon us the most, Giuliani, turned out to be the biggest joke of them all.
So forgive me if I'm not as hyper-enthused about the outcome of the NYC mayoral race as some are.
Cuomo's a schmuck, always has struck me as a bit of a schmuck even when he was considered a True Blue Dem. The disparity between his legacy and his father's legacy isn't quite as wide as that between RFK and RFK Jr., but it's close.
Mamdani? Really don't know what to say about him, other than to laugh at some of the hysteria that's been thrown up against him, which seems to be coming straight out of late 2001. He's a bit of an unknown quantity, but I wish the best for him.
Besides that...meh.
It's a municipal election.

(1,880 posts)it's symbollic. The right and Trumpler hate Mamdani so....that's enough for me to root for the guy, plus he has some outstanding tax the rich, and provide for the poor policies.

(23,219 posts)But clearly, the moneyed powers-that-be dont see this as a meh event, judging by their panicked attacks on Mamdani.
The DNC couldnt stop Mamdani by ignoring him, and that is a BFD.

Time will tell, it just seems different

(151,259 posts)We have two municipal elections that are almost as bizarre. Both Minneapolis and our State Capitol, St. Paul, have similar Mayoral elections. And yet, they get almost no national media attention. While they are not as huge as NYC, the issues are really pretty similar in both.
In the end, though, they're all just municipal mayoral elections, aren't they?

(25,048 posts)As a New Yorker, Im curious. Ill probably not care too much about your local elections either, frankly.
NYC has rarely had a good mayor. Its such a large and diverse city that its hard to imagine managing it! But given our choices, here are my thoughts.
Sliwa is a no go. Hes inexperienced, highly partisan and a Republican.
Cuomo is way past his sell-by date. Most New Yorkers remember his scandals and why he resigned as governor. Another no go.
Mamdani is fresh with new ideas. Hell face the same complications as the others but hes the Democratic candidate.
None of these men can ever run for president, in my opinion.

(5,749 posts)The national news believes anything that happens in New York is national news. Blizzard hitting New York? Show hours of footage driving around Manhattan to show how empty it is. Crane coming loose on top of a building? Show hours of watching it teeter.
Even the weather. At a time when I was working elsewhere on the East Coast, the national weather segment spoke in great detail of what was happening in New York, followed by the cut to local, which should have been for the region I was in, but was just another repeat of the weather in the five boroughs.
