Going into tonight, the Democrats held 51 seats in the 100 member House of Delegates, the Repubs 48 and one seat was vacant (previously held by a Democrat). At the end of the night, it appears that the Democrats will have 64 seats and the repubs will have only 36 -- a net loss of 12 of the 48 seats they held.
That is an astonishing outcome, particularly since some observers suggested that only 7 of the Republican held seats were competitive and the other were all safe.

Thats indeed surprising. It shows how quickly voter sentiment can shift, even in districts once considered safe.
