Texas Gov. Abbott says he will impose tariffs on people who move from NYC to Texas

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that once the polls closed in New York City, he would be putting a tariff on people leaving the Big Apple for Texas.

“After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC,” Abbott wrote on the social media platform, X.

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race on Tuesday. He will succeed current Mayor Eric Adams on Jan. 1.

Mamdani will be New York City’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest mayor since 1892.

which would be hefty. Is the tax on assets, possessions, house, career, salary? Could quickly add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. 100%. That is confiscatory level taxation. What was yours now belongs to the state of Texas. Theft by taking.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "better to keep silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

I didn't fact check this but I like it.

whereby federal law (including the Constitution) takes precedence over conflicting state law. Congress is given the SOLE power to levy tariffs. It would also violate the Equal Protection Clause, and so far as I know, there is no provision to lay tariffs under Texas law, anyway, by anyone.

All of that in addition to the question raised by others here: Tariff what?

So he’s going to levy a fee on people from New York coming to Texas? I’m no constitutional scholar…but somehow I doubt he has the authority to do that. He’s basically just talking out of his ass.

Besides, Texas is more likely to draw Mamdani opponents and right wingers. They complain a lot about Californians but a lot of the time, I hear people leaving due to the oppressive politics and weather, among other things.

What is he exactly charging a tariff on?

I think they are so used to including a lot of buzz words they are reduced to making points like "Woke, communist, critical race theory, DEI, socialism, but MAGA!! Thank you for attention to this matter."

I guess cause what tariff ? I live in Texas and can't understand why someone would want to move here anyway. (I always said I'd never move to Texas, but married someone here, unfortunately
