Will & Grace actress Debra Messing has courted backlash after sharing on election day a political meme suggesting that New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is a "jihadist."

As Americans headed to the polls Tuesday, the 57-year-old Emmy winner reposted an image on her verified Instagram Story from another account called The Persian Jewess. The original image showed an edited ballot that listed two candidates: One that read, "A Democrat. Just a Democrat," and the other that said, "An actual communist jihadist. A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist."

I liked Michael Rapaport, mainly because for the past 7 years, he has unapologetically and relentlessly SHIT all over Donald Trump (or as he called him, “Dick Stain Donald Trump”) and the MAGA movement.

His comment sections were always overrun with MAGAts absolutely losing their mind defending their cult leader.

Obviously, he’s Jewish and extremely proud of his heritage. I can respect that.

Pretty sure he simps for Netanyahu too….but that’s beside the point.

The guy is sitting down for interviews with right wing MAGA lunatics like Sage Steele. He unendorsed President Biden (or as he calls him, “Cadaver Joe Biden”) back in May and has stated he’s 100% not voting for VP Harris, and has stated multiple times that “voting for Trump is on the table”.

He continually calls out “the Squad”, and ignorantly lumps the Squad’s views towards I/P as the ENTIRE Democratic party’s views.

Now, the same MAGAts who followed him to flood his comments in a rage are now DROWNING his comments with “Trump 2024!!!” in solidarity with Rapaport.

I don’t think I’ve ever suddenly hated a public figure so deeply after spending years genuinely liking them.

I had to vent to that out. I was just curious if anyone else has caught on to his heel turn as well

Even as New York City mayoral-race polls started to point to a victory for Zohran Mamdani Tuesday night, Andrew Cuomo’s biggest fans refused to give up the fight. One of the most recognizable faces advocating for Cuomo in his final push was Debra Messing, who has spent the past 48 hours posting Islamophobic content and misinformation about Mamdani on her Instagram Story.

Messing participated in early voting last week, writing in a post that she opted for Cuomo because “we need someone with experience.” “Our city is too massive, complex, and consequential to have someone 33 years old who has never held a job, and missed 80% of his votes as Councilman,” Messing wrote on Instagram. “Perhaps with more experience. But not now.”

Her reposts on Election Day, however, showed a much more extreme perspective. Before the race was called, Messing, who is Jewish and a staunch advocate for Israel, shared a barrage of graphics and videos warning Jewish people not to vote for Mamdani owing to his pro-Palestine beliefs. When she wasn’t fearmongering in that direction, she was being blatantly Islamophobic. One graphic she reposted read, “A vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani is a vote for New-York-Stan.” Another featured a ballot on which the options were “A Democrat” and “An Actual Communist Jihadist … A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist.” (This image was also posted to X on Monday by none other than Senator Ted Cruz.) It’s worth noting Mamdani is not a communist but a democratic socialist.

On Monday, Messing shared a post from an account called @joanofjudea, which claimed that while Judaism and Christianity encourage honesty, Muslims are “commanded to lie if it means spreading Islam.” “He’s revealing their goal: Mass conversion,” the post read. “These two opposing civilizations cannot coexist.”

Other posts that appeared on Messing’s Story came from conservative outlets such as CPAC, Breitbart, and Newsmax. She also shared multiple posts about President Donald Trump endorsing Cuomo, as well as screenshots of Trump’s Truth Social posts about the election, including one in which he wrote, “Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!” Mamdani has condemned antisemitism many times throughout his campaign.

This was the most radical thing he could say, and it was also the most effective. It gave permission for everyone else to trust their own eyes as well. This is why Mamdani is hated and called a jihadist and whatever else. He told people it was OK to trust what they were seeing with their own eyes, and to speak on it.

Unfortunately, my oldest and dearest friend has had the same conversion after October 7, 2023. She sees all Muslims as the enemy, anti-semitism everywhere and thinks Israel is the most honorable country in the world. She follows Messing on Instagram, and I can only imagine what she's thinking about Mamdani's election. I have the feeling I've lost my friend forever. I know it's trauma, but I can't accept the hate that she spews.
