I wrote to a huge "home improvement" store because of their ad for Christmas Toys "for the under privileged"

They want everyone to bring new unwrapped toys for the not so fortunate…I wrote and said oh this is rich, you, a huge billion dollar business accepting toys for the not so fortunate, why don’t you just give the toys YOU BUY away. 🤬 🤬 🤬

I agree with your sentiment though. They should at least offer to match donations in their stores.

they then transfer them to the charity (hopefully) and claim it as their own tax deduction. Pretty sweet deal for them and they get publicly recognized for their 'generosity' without incurring any significant expenses (unless they match the donations).

That is exactly how it works. In some cases they also take administrative cost as another right off.
So even tho it makes you feel good to round up or make a dollar donation remember 100 percent does not go to the charity you are donating to.
That's why I choose to donate directly to the charities I support.
