Speaker Mike Johnson plans to swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) before the House votes on a government funding package, Punchbowl News reports.
Grijalvas installation in the House does not change the voting math for the funding bill. But she said she will sign the discharge petition to release the Epstein files. Grijalvas signature will force a vote in the House.

(10,833 posts)All it does is force an immediate vote on whether to release the Epstein files and that vote will probably be "no" unless there are enough Repubs to defy Trump, and even if there are, then it moves to the Senate where there will never even be a vote.
Finally, it is a resolution, not a law, so there would be no way to force Trump to comply even if it passed both houses of congress.

(2,849 posts)Specifies types of records: The types of records to be released include those about his detention and death, flight logs, names of individuals connected to his criminal activities, immunity or plea deals, and internal Department of Justice communications concerning his case.
Includes redaction guidelines: The committee can withhold or redact information that contains victims' personally identifiable information, child sexual abuse materials, images of abuse, or information that could jeopardize an active investigation. It cannot withhold information based on embarrassment or political sensitivity.
Supports ongoing investigation: The resolution explicitly states support for the committee's subpoenas and investigatory actions and encourages timely compliance.

(2,849 posts)...which the house has so far refused to do for the most part.
It isnt about forcing the DOJ to do anything. It is about forcing the house to do... something.

(8,876 posts)now that Senate DEMs heading out the door caved? Or do I hold the line until the TN special election that would nullify Grijalvas vote on the discharge petition?
Guess Big Airlines had their say on Capitol Hill and want those traffic controllers paid and back on the job before profits from holiday travel go kablooey!
Start the timer to clock how long it takes for Trump and GOP to tell furloughed federal workers they are SOL regarding missed paychecks during the shutdown!
edited because my typos get worse when I am pissed off.

(10,833 posts)The only effect that special election could possibly have is if there are enough Republicans to vote with Dems to release the files now but with a newly elected Republican there would not be enough votes.

Wiz Imp
(9,993 posts)to force a full vote. The full House has 435 seats. There are currently 2 vacant, but they don't factor in to the discharge petition requirements. A majority for discharge petition purposes always requires a majority of the FULL HOUSE which is always 218 (1/2 x 435 + 1). Grijalva will be signature #218. There have been 215 House Republicans who have refused to sign the petition. There are 2 vacant seats. Even if both winners refused to sign the petition, that would make 217. The majority is GUARANTEED with Grijalva's signature.

(10,833 posts)That is the point. I don't think anyone ever expected the petition would actually lead to the release of the Epstein files.

My guess is, the senate will do exactly NOTHING with this, and this has already been established as part of fucking dems even harder for caving.

(9,993 posts)Grijalva will be sworn in sometime in the next day or 2. She will immediately sign the petition. Then there will be a slight delay (which is required) before the legislation gets brought to the floor of the House. That should happen sometime next week.

Something so incriminating seems unlikely to be hiding in a DOJ file cabinet.

(12,280 posts)Just as it was true during the shutdown there is absolutely nothing stopping him from giving the oath of office and therefore if he didn't have to do it a week ago then he doesn't have to do it now.
I utterly and unequivocally do not trust Republicans and whenever they do the right thing I question the motivation. I don't know the angle here but don't trust it
