Rep. Jesús Chuy Garcías (D-Ill.) chief of staff has launched a campaign to replace her outgoing boss, who is retiring after his current term.
Patty García, who is unrelated to the congressman, touted her progressive positions and experience as a staffer on Capitol Hill in a press release Wednesday announcing her bid to represent Illinoiss 4th Congressional District.
Its time for leaders in Congress with the courage to actually fight for working people, Patty García said, pledging to address the cost of living, a pathway to citizenship for migrants and to hold the billionaires who are eroding our democracy accountable.
Last Friday, Chuy García, who has represented the district spanning parts of Chicago and the Cook County suburbs since January 2019, announced he was not seeking reelection. The deputy whip of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Chuy García sits on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.

(21,061 posts)The Illinois congressman's top aide is the only Democrat running to replace him after he announced his retirement after the filing deadline.
WASHINGTON Democratic Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcias ploy to hand-pick his successor for his Illinois seat has sparked a war of words between congressional Democrats. The divisions come at the exact time the party is trying to unify behind issues such as health care, affordability and releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files.
On Wednesday night, just as the House was prepared to vote to reopen the government, a fellow Democrat, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, of Washington state, took to the floor and ripped into Garcia, sparking shock and outrage from many of her Democratic colleagues. Both are members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Chicago-style 'machine tactics'
Rep Chuy Garcias decision to end his re-election at the last second and plant his chief of staff as the only candidate to succeed him was undemocratic and should not be allowed, Kim posted on X in response to a video of her floor speech. Standing against corruption means standing up no matter which political party violates. The House should condemn and steps need to be taken to restore the peoples right to choose.

A longtime Chicago Democratic political operative long supportive of Garcia said many progressives were angered over Garcias decision. There are up-and-comers whove been waiting in line, the Democratic source said. Ultimately, however, Garcia proved he is a Chicago political animal, his detractors said.

(10,333 posts)If there are these "up-and-comers" that were hoping for the nomination, what is to stop them from running?
If Garcia's endorsement is so powerful in his district that no other candidate could possibly beat the person he endorsed in the primary, well, that's not some conspiracy theory or rigging -- it's a sign the other candidates just aren't good enough in the eyes of the voters.

(21,061 posts)U.S. Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia (D-Illinois) is facing backlash over his last-minute decision not to run for another term in 2026, a move that helped open an obvious path for his chief of staff to replace him.
While the congressman filed nominating petitions on Oct. 27 to run for re-election, his chief of staff Patty Garcia (no relation to the congressman) filed her own nominating petitions at the deadline on Monday evening, and sources confirmed Garcia plans to withdraw his own petitions, leaving his top aide as the only Democrat running in the upcoming primary.

However, it's the timing of making his decision public that has drawn criticism. Instead of immediately making his decision public immediately, his organization gathered signatures for his chief of staff to run, and filed them right at Monday's deadline.
Until then, the four-time incumbent congressman had been the only Democrat to file for the March primary, and with his plans to drop out not being made public until after the filing deadline, no other candidates had time to jump in the race.

(10,333 posts)I believe Chuy is a progressive and it says the "up-and-comers" were also progressive, so did they just not want to primary a progressive...?
Even though you would think Chuy's chief of staff would also be a progressive...

Garcia had filed his candidacy, but by the time he withdrew, the filing deadline had passed. It was too late for anyone else to file as a primary candidate.
If you read either of the two news stories at the links, you'll see all the details.

(10,333 posts)Or were they okay with him, just not his chief of staff?
Or was it just that they all feel shutout from an opening Representative position?
Well, they'll all have the opportunity to challenge his chief of staff next cycle (assuming they win the general, which I figure is close to guaranteed).
