TN-07: Democrats eye Trump country for a special election surprise
Democrats sweeping victories last week have the party eyeing gains in even Trumpier territory, where voters in a deep-red Tennessee House seat will soon pick their next member of Congress in a special election.
Early voting started Wednesday in Tennessees 7th District, a geographically expansive seat that reaches the states borders with Kentucky and Alabama and includes swaths of Nashville, to replace retired GOP Rep. Mark Green. And Democrats are projecting some optimism in a district President Donald Trump carried by more than 20 points last November.
It really feels like theres so much momentum on the ground, Democratic nominee Aftyn Behn said in an interview. The national attention is on this race and on Tennessee.
Recent internal polling from Democrats has Behn within 8 to 10 points of her Republican opponent Matt Van Epps, which she said places her in striking distance. DNC Chair Ken Martin also traveled to the state last weekend to campaign for Behn.
