2. I would bet the picture that will emerge is that Epstein was trying to track Trump's involvement with the Russians

e.g. laundering money for them. This is because Trump knew of Epstein's activities around minors, so he wanted dirt on Trump to counter it. Even if he also had dirt on Trump's activities with minors, that's not something he can necessarily use without drawing attention to his own activities. TBH I wouldn't be terribly surprised to find out Epstein was somehow involved in the Russian investigation that took place just prior to the election in 2016, i.e. he furnished info to the DoJ about what he knew about Trumps Russian dealings aka Operation Crossfire Hurricane.
