'We're not California': MD Republicans to sponsor bill to end midcycle redistricting
Maryland state House and Senate Republicans announced Thursday that they plan to introduce a bill to prohibit midcycle redistricting as Gov. Wes Moore intensifies his push for changing congressional district lines.
“Look, we’re not Texas, we’re not Indiana, we’re not California, we’re not Ohio, we’re not Virginia,” House Minority Whip Jesse Pippy, R-Frederick, said at an Annapolis news conference. “This is Maryland, and the fact of the matter is, Democrats in Maryland have gerrymandered this state to a pulp. There’s no juice left.”
The General Assembly‘s Republican leadership will introduce the Fair Districts for Maryland Act, which would codify that the state’s redistricting cycle only occurs after the U.S. Census results are released once a decade.
The bill would also establish a bipartisan commission with designees from the governor and legislative leadership, as well as mandated representation from Independent voters and the minority party.
