...and was meant to protect Democratic legislators from Trump's DOJ intruding on Democrats' privacy, not to give themselves a payday.

But just ignore that the president and his DOJ thugs are going after Democrats. Just make up shit that makes them not only look like crooks, but advocates leaving them without these defenses.

Remember, Trump's goons suing the Biden administration and the Special Counsel have no case. They're bullshitting and that will out itself in court.

Trump's award he's seeking isn't a court judgement, it's a DOJ arranged payment that he signs off on.
