My few encounters with conservatives the past couple of weeks.

My aunt and I just returned from a 12-day Caribbean cruise and it was wonderful. The night before the ship sailed, we stayed in a hotel near the airport because we had an early morning flight. The hotel had a free shuttle to the airport and we chatted with the driver, as one does. At one point he mentioned that illegal immigrants are given food stamps and healthcare as soon as they cross the border and I said "They are not" and my aunt and the driver simultaneously said "Yes they are." This is news to me. I didn't know there was someone standing at the border handing put food stamps and healthcare to everyone who steps foot in this country. You learn something new everyday.

We ate in the dining room almost every night and a nice couple from New England sat next to us. One night I mentioned I love Ben & Jerry's and the husband leaned over, covered one side of his mouth with his hand and said in a stage-whisper "They're ultra liberals, you know" and I said "So am I" and he was shocked. He said "You ARE?" It was pretty funny. I wish I had a camera for the look on his face. He didn't hold it against me though. We stayed friendly throughout the cruise and even had the server (who was excellent, by the way) take pictures of the four of us for a remembrance.

One night, two couples sat on the other side of us at dinner and of course, we asked where they were from and they said Illinois. My aunt made some kind of comment like "oh boy" and they said "oh, not Chicago" {???). I said "I'm from Detroit and I love Chicago" and that pretty much killed the conversation. I don't get it. Maybe they think Chicago is too full of crime and "libruls" for their liking. They warmed up again toward the end of the meal. I think the booze might have helped them deal with a heathen like me much better.

Finally, one afternoon, my aunt, who is a conservative Republican because my uncle is and she says and does everything he tells her to, said to me "You know who's a rising star in the Democrat [sic] party?" Oh do tell who you think is a rising star in the Democratic party. "John Fetterman. He write a book called 'Unfettered'" I guess she thought that was clever or something. John Fetterman is no rising star in our party. In fact, I hope the good people of Pennsylvania primary him so he can run as the Republican he seems to want to be. I just said something to the effect of I think that stroke affected him more than anyone realized.

I love Chicago. It has so much to offer. It is a vibrant, beautiful city with so much culture and history and different groups of people and attractions and a fantastic public transportation system. And, of course, I love the Cubs. And the pizza! And Italian beef sandwiches! ❤️

It really is a melting pot. It's what this country is supposed to be about. How lucky you are to live there!

for President Obama and the Pope, they're all right by me. Actually, I've never had any animosity toward the Sox; I save that for the Cardinals!

If you had said Cardinals forever, that would be quite a different story, my friend!

my ex was a lifelong fan. we were in a little season ticket cabal. had a lot of fun. except for that 1 time on my bday. very hot day, playing the yankees, in front of a whole row of yankee fans. got whooped.

i think of the cubs as the richy rich team, and the sox as the pinko team.

My mother; the evil step-father; his brother; his brother's fiancee; and I went to see the Cubs play the Cardinals over Labor Day weekend. That was when all the Cubs games were played in the day and there were doubleheaders that were actually scheduled and you got to see two games for the price of one. Those were the days. Anyway, there were four games over the weekend and the Cubs and Cardinals were battling it out for last place. I think they were 15 and 16 games out of first. Wrigley Field was packed and I thought any team that can fill a ballpark when they have no shot at a pennant has got to be cool. Of course, I didn't know anything about the Cubs/Cardinals rivalry back then. In Detroit, people are Tigers fans when they're winning, you'll see Tigers hats and t-shirts everywhere but not if they're losing. They would never sell out their ballpark if they were in last place on Labor Day weekend (unless Mark Fidrych was pitching - everybody loved him).

In 1984, I became a die-hard Cubs fan. I was so hoping for a Cubs/Tigers World Series but it was not to be. I had high hopes for it this year, too.

You would think I would be a White Sox fan because they're more working class, blue collar and the Cubs are more Yuppie-ish (is that still a thing?) but the Cubs got to me first!

And in conclusion (because this has become way too long), I once saw a video online with a little girl who was a White Sox fan and her family gave her a huge box of Cubs' memorabilia for Christmas and when she opened her present, she burst into tears. She was genuinely upset. I guess they thought it would be funny to trick her like that. I thought that was stupid and mean. First, that they would do it and secondly, that they would tape it and post it online.

but y r right about the yuppies. i hate going to that neighborhood. those ppl piss and puke all over.
when the sox won the series, player after player got up and said- we’re all pullin on the same rope here.
the played small ball and won ugly.
pinkos.
much nicer park, too. roomier, better food, better beer. even the old comisky was a nicer park.

the cubs under wrigley were all about the back page of the trib. they’d spend all their money on sluggers then wonder y they lost.
the reason they have so many fans is wgn radio had a huge reach and so they were the only bball that a lot of ppl cd listen to. these days, i have no idea y.

I remember - WGN played all the Cubs games back then! I worked nights at the time and would turn the TV next to the window way up and lay out in the yard and listen to Steve Stone and Harry Carey every single afternoon. It was wonderful.

I love Wrigleyville! I never saw anything there like you described. Of course, I only go once a year, maybe twice, these days.

Meteors don't rise. They fall in the Earth's atmosphere, burn up, and often explode spectacularly.

This is far too common. However, I recently heard about an 80+ year old woman who changed completely after the death of her husband. Now she listens to Rachel Madow regularly and supports teh gays!

that she couldn't really be herself for so long. But then again, better late than never.

Unfortunately, that's the way it is for so many women, even in this day and age. That sure wouldn't be me. Nobody is going to tell me what to think; who to vote for; what my opinion should be, etc. Probably why I'm a childless cat lady who's ruining the country with my poor choices!

11. Fetterman sure as hell ain't a rising star in the Democratic Party
Fri Nov 14, 2025, 03:05 PM
Nov 2025

But he also sure as hell ain't no Republican. He has voted around 90% of the time with the majority of the Democratic party.

Heritage Action, part of the Heritage Foundation, rates Fetterman at 7%, which is lower than the average Senate Democrat at 11%.
https://heritageaction.com/scorecard/members/F000479/118
The AFL-CIO gives him a 100% lifetime score.
https://aflcio.org/scorecard/legislators/john-fetterman
The League of Conservation Voters gives him a 90% lifetime score
https://www.lcv.org/congressional-scorecard/members-of-congress/
He has a 100% score from the Leadership Conference
on Civil and Human Rights
https://civilrights.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Voting-Record-First-Session-118th-Congress.pdf

That is not the voting record of somewhat even remotely leaning Republican.

He has also rated as being further left than at least 15 other Democratic Senators.

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/john_fetterman/456877

I wish he would keep his mouth shut and stop saying stupid things, but his voting record is far better than seemingly 99% of the people here seem to think or are willing to acknowledge.

His voting record is very similar to King, Warner, Kaine, Hassan, Shaheen, Gallego, Kelly, Slotkin, Peters, Bennet, Rosen, Cortez Masto & Coons- none of whom get even 1/100 of the level of complaints here that Fetterman gets.

15. Thank you for your insight on Fetterman. I guess I've only heard the bad parts about him.
Fri Nov 14, 2025, 05:39 PM
Nov 2025

But I live in Michigan and Slotkin and Peters have seriously let me down. I never liked Peters to begin with and Slotkin has been a major disappointment to me so far and she was just elected last year.

But as my mother used to say, "The worst Democrat is better than the best Republican" which certainly holds true these days since there aren't any "best" Republicans anymore.

Exactly! At this point, I'll be hoping for someone better than Fetterman in 2028. But, there's no guarantee a primary challenger in 2028 would prove to be preferable to him (the only truly consequential votes he has taken have been for the CRs and he had stated on his day 1 that he will never vote against a CR if that vote could lead to a shutdown - so he has stuck to his pledge). There is no standout alternate potential candidate at this point. Many people now say they wish Conor Lamb had won the primary in 2022, but Lamb's track record was much more conservative than Fetterman. And as a Representative in Congress, Lamb sided with President Trump and Republicans on a number of occasions. He supported Trump’s border wall; opposed the HEROES Act, a 2020 Democratic COVID relief bill that was the precursor to the American Rescue Plan; and rejected a measure that sought to prevent President Trump from using the military against Black Lives Matter protesters. I don't think the people unhappy with Fetterman would be any happier with Lamb. Regardless, Lamb has already said he will not run in 2028 though he could still change his mind.

I wonder if Casey would run again? My guess is he wouldn't primary Fetterman, but if Fetterman decides not to seek reelection (which wouldn't be a surprise given his health), I wouldn't be surprised to see Casey jump back in. The office I worked in had a lot of contact with Casey's office looking for our data and analysis, and I can say, Casey's staff was always great to work with. He really was a great Senator.
