...running against an incredibly unpopular Republican administration helps to overcome, because people will focus more on that than superficial features like skin color or sex.

Hillary and Kamala both ran during Democratic administrations, when it is much harder for a Democrat to win than running during Republican administrations.

It's harder for either party to be elected when their party is in power, as long as the voters are reasonably well informed.

I fear we are at or near a tipping point where too many US voters are so misinformed and brainwashed they will continue to vote Republican no matter what.

...people will have firsthand experience that directly contradicts the propaganda (e.g., all the Trump voters that are now upset with everything and claim they didn't vote for any of this, blah, blah, blah).
