According to the U.S. flag code, the flag should never touch anything beneath it. That guidance, according to the Cornell Law School, reads: “The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.”

Discussing what to do after the flag was already flopped on the ground.
Or maybe just one guy watching while the other gathers or balls it up like he's collecting dirty towels off a locker room floor.
A flag that large needs at least four to six people just to manage the flag as it comes down to keep it from touching the ground, not counting the person lowering it.

If you are willing to wear the flag as an item of clothing- a shirt, the lining of a suit jacket, or a bikini-

you have no concept of flag etiquette.

Andrew Leyden, a journalist and former lawyer, wrote on X: “The @POTUS returned to the White House but the rotor wash from Marine One blew down the American flag on the new flagpole. UPDATE: Upon review of additional footage, it appears the flag was down before Marine One arrived. Not sure why.”

The White House has not publicly responded or explained what led to the flag being on the ground as of reporting.

Trump's 2025 executive order
On August 25, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order to increase prosecutions for flag burning.

Vigorous prosecution: The order directs the Attorney General to "vigorously prosecute" those who violate existing laws in ways that involve desecrating the flag and to "clarify the scope of the First Amendment exceptions".
Immigration penalties: It also instructs relevant agencies to deny or revoke visas, residence permits, or other immigration benefits for non-citizens who desecrate the flag in a manner that allows for such remedies under federal law.
Intended limitations: Legal experts have noted that prosecutions could be brought only for actions connected to flag burning that are not protected by the First Amendment, such as arson, theft, or inciting "imminent lawless action".
Expected legal challenge: Free speech advocates and legal experts state that the order runs contrary to established First Amendment law and will likely face court challenges

@ sunset the flag should be taken down and folded properly and it should not touch the ground.

they really emphasized the flag code and at overnight camp (mine was 2 weeks), the girls rotated in groups for who did the color guard/flag duty, the mess hall, campsite/latrine cleaning, etc.

There was a whole ritual every evening, when the flag at our camp was lowered (with "Taps" sung, but just the first verse) and the assigned group did the "triangle folding" of it to put it away for the evening.

IIRC, if the flag hits the ground, it is supposed to be disposed of (burned). The flag can fly 24/7 on a pole as long as it is lit at night. If there is no light on it at night, it is supposed to be lowered.
