One of the elements that makes the American military American is its refusal to engage in war crimes (hopefully this is seen as a positive). As opposed to the Russian military that encourages rape and murder of civilians as policy, witness Ukraine. Yes I know there are plenty of examples of us failing to follow this precept. But its a failure, not a policy.
This refusal is not just something for upper echelons to be aware of. This starts at the lowest grade and spirals up, as well as coming from on high. Privates and generals and all in between are responsible for their actions as well as those around them. Thats sorta what makes it the military and allows the government to safely arm soldiers with some of the deadliest weapons on earth.
Everyone keeps everyone else in check. Its a team effort
.or else its murderous chaos. Just ask Lt Calley.
That the draft dodger trump doesnt understand this doesnt surprise
.well, anyone really. It should make people wonder just what he has in mind for his use of OUR military. He is using the military in the Caribbean without Congressional authorization almost as a terrorist force.
We could easily find ourselves, due to trumps ignorance, caught up in an unnecessary international conflagration.
We are a nation whose rule of law supersedes all else, and the rule in the military is you do not obey unlawful orders. Its not a choice.

(3,470 posts)Anything coming out of Trumps mouth or Truth post is law. EVEN WHEN IT ISNT!
These Dems did nothing but state what was currently a real law
that no one should follow orders if it is an illegal order.
As usual, the Republican spin takes us into bizarro world!

(4,370 posts)"Just following orders" didn't play well at the Nuremberg trials.
For the executioners at Auschwitz and the other death camps it was "legal" to murder milions of innocent people.
At some point the individual has to decide what's moral despite "legality".

(326 posts)Or trump ever served in the military they would know 'the not shooting Americans' part was taught early and often in the various training camps. They should at least read the oaths these young people take.
