9. I think Dave Granlund is wrong...

From the expression on Uncle Sam's face, it appears that Uncle Sam thinks that "God shed his grace on thee" is a statement (one which he finds difficult to believe, or appreciate.) But that isn't so. "God shed his grace on the" is not a statement but a prayer. As is "Crown thy good with brotherhood." It's a parallel construction and both are prayers.

Which is no reflection on your wonderful cartoon collection - it captures ALL the feels of this Thanksgiving.
