36% approval to 60% disapproval is a big fucking deal. The poll validates all the negative polling data from so many other polls. Trump still holds sway among the Republican electorate makes that more dangerous for his party. That means pro-Trump candidates have the advantage in Republican primaries, but with solid Democratic disapproval, coupled with Trump's favorability in the twenties among Independents, the Republicans are being led to a political slaughter.
I can't see this changing in the next year. I don't see the economy improving or Trump modifying his despicable behavior. As bad as it seems now for Trump and the Republicans, I think it will get much worse before November.

(81 posts)Recent polling has shown that Trump has lost support from his own GOP voters since January when registered Republican voters gave him a 94% approval rating. Recent polling now has his approval among Republican voters at 88%, which is proof that the entire Republican Party, except for a small number of defectors, has gone full blown fascist.

(114,318 posts)but his approval rating on the eve of his resignation was still 24%.
Some people are born stupid and others work at it and they all want to stay that way. While I think Fatso could conceivably get as low as 20-22$, I don't see him going any lower than that.w

(75,530 posts)25% of voters have joined the cult and are sure they're right, no matter the evidence & obvious failures.
Another 5% care about nothing but low taxes.
30% is what I estimate as the floor.
Maybe done of 5% can be turned because low taxes no longer justify so an incompetent yet abusive administration.
But, good luck on flipping more than a tiny fraction of that 25%.

with dismal numbers like that.
So theyre spending all their energy figuring out how to win unfairly
rather than doing things that people might actually approve of.

(4,774 posts)They need enough popular votes to disenfranchise and gerrymander their way to win. But giving their voters what the voters want economically is a no-go for the people who support Republican politicians, the oiligarchs.
So Republicans will have to concentrate on the social issues about which the oiligarchs either do not care, or are on the side of Republican voters. And this will be difficult to do as the economy stalls for 90% of the country.

(9,287 posts)Voting is not approval rating.
Voting starts with the actual motivation and positive feeling that's a result of the vote.
Non-voters / disenfranchised don't feel positive.

(4,774 posts)of the ignorant and apathetic third of the electorate is waking up, finally, and do not like what they see.
The Republican third is holding mostly firm as they follow their Dear Leader into hell. Although I don't expect more than a couple of percent of them to vote Democratic, there were about twenty percent who disapproved of Trump after his failed coup attempt and probably many of these will just stay home rather than vote.
Hopefully the moderate Democratic voters won't follow Schumer's example and refuse to support Democratic candidates who are too left wing for their taste, or even worse, support Republican-lite plants meant to weaken the Democratic candidates. It is going to be difficult for Republicans to gerrymander and disenfranchise their way to control of the House, but they are putting forth an extreme effort and we will need every vote.

(75,530 posts)There is substantial evidence that this was said by David Hannum , a Barnum competitor, who intended to disparage Barnum & his audiences after a dispute over the Cardiff Giant hoax. When Hannum wouldn't see the giant to Barnum, he simply invented his own "mummified" hoax. Hannum, in an effort to denigrate the competition used this phrase which is odd since he was already promoting his own hoax.
There is some history to suggest thr phrase originally was publicly used by Joespeh Bessimer to explain his penchant for running scams & cons.
But, as Barnum was known to respect his customers, it's very unlikely he ever said such a thing, and there is no such reference in his personal writings nor any direct quote from contemporary reporters.
Quoting him as saying that is a black eye that Barnum doesn't really deserve.

(4,774 posts)I wonder how the check the veracity of respondent's claims of party identity. Of course there are some people who will always support any president because they think that it is patriotic. And there are some people who will say that two plus two is four, but will not commit to agreeing that two times two is four. Unfortunately both of these types of people probably vote.

I'm sure there are still many Southern Democrats who remain Democrats out of some Civil War Heritage. It doesn't take many of these idiots to get to 3%.

(17,213 posts)Have we already forgotten Dubya's two wars where his administration wouldn't allow media coverage of coffins coming home a la Viet Nam? The GOPers know that the people turned against that war once they saw the carnage on TV during dinner time. Our media is bought and paid for by the GOP.

(104 posts)Overall support is into the mid 80s from Republicans. That might still seem high, but consider that almost 70% of Independents and over 95% of Democrats are opposed to him. Also consider that they classify party by self ID. So, these aren't just Republicans, they are Republicans who are willing to self-identify as Republicans in the survey. That is a group much more likely to also support Trump than just those registered as Republicans.
Many of those are saying they are Independents because they don't want to associate with the Republicans right now.
It should be noted that almost 1 in 5 people who are self-identifying as Republicans are now saying they don't think Trump is doing a good job. In the July poll it was almost 1 in 10. In this inauguration poll it was less than 1 in 10 and Independents were supporting him at an even clip.
His support is eroding faster than a sandcastle at high tide.
