'Uncommitted' co-founder launches state Senate bid in Michigan

A co-founder of the “Uncommitted” movement, which pressed Democratic voters to cast a protest vote against former President Biden in the 2024 primary over the administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war, launched a campaign on Thursday for a state Senate seat in Michigan.

“I’m Abbas Alawieh, and I’m running for state Senate to fight for your family like it’s my own,” Alawieh said in his launch video on the social platform X.

“I know what it takes to stand tall when others tell us to sit down. When the establishment was funding genocide abroad while failing to deliver for working families here at home, I took action and led a historic anti-war movement that mobilized 1 million pro-peace Democratic voters to demand change,” he added, referring to his work on the Uncommitted movement last year.

Alawieh is running for Michigan Senate District 2, which represents all of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, as well as portions of Detroit and Allen Park. The district is currently represented by state Sen. Sylvia Santana (D).
