My son was laughing about the felon's whining about attention to his failing health. He placed it in the context of the felon's increasing rate of insulting females, be they in the media or House of Representatives. “This has a different flavor, the distilled rage of his past shit. He is more confused,” my son said.
I mentioned the issues relating to the destruction of a section of the White House, including the bit about asbestos. My son said he wishes the felon would hurry up and get it completed. I asked why? “Because I want White House Correspondents' Dinners to be held there for as long as he is alive. Each year, I want Hillary Clinton to speak about how criminals the felon is, followed by Obama telling jokes about him to the crowd's delight. I want a Joe Biden Peace Prize awarded to OAC, each and every year. I theorize that this would be the best bet for reminding the corporate media that Donald Dognuts is a sick old fuck.”
After being a registered Democrat through his 20s, he is now an independent, to the left. I do understand most of the frustrations of my children's generation. But I also thinks he enjoys debating his brother and I when we get together, and my other son tells me his brother is competing with my youthful activism. I think this is a genetic feature found in all the males on my paternal side (and yet, DNA tests all document I am related to them).
It made me happy that my son was saying those things about the Correspondents' Dinner. Lately, I have been having fun discussions with my sons and daughters about the teachings of Malcolm X, John Trudell, and Fred Hampton. This weekend, there were discussions on Hampton saying we must go beyond knowing and saying the right things, for there must be actions to bring about actual progress.
I make sure to say that I'm as progressive as I ever was, just a lot older, and I've learned that the Democratic Party provides the best vehicle to bring about meaningful change. And I point out that while Malcolm was not a Democrat – and when he recognized the importance of political participation, recommended his audience register as independents – he did work with several Democrats. These are among the “heirlooms” I try to hand off to the younger generations.
(PS: I was happy late at night to send my son a link to Connecticut state rep Liz Linehan's page, where she had posted Jim Morrison's mug shots from December 9, 1967 in New Haven. We have many very good Democrats in all levels of office. We need to support them, and leadership will arise.)
