WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States has seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela amid mounting tensions with the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

It’s the Trump administration’s latest push to increase pressure on Maduro, who has been charged with narcoterrorism in the United States. The U.S. has conducted a series of deadly military strikes in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean on boats that the Republican administration has alleged are carrying drugs.
“We’ve just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela, a large tanker, very large, largest one ever seized, actually,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Trump said “other things are happening,” but did not offer additional details, saying he would speak more about it later.

Agreed, the oil from Venezuela is very poor quality, and needs special handling to refine. Most US refineries cannot process the crude.

Decrease supply from the world's largest oil reserves and it's more money in Russia and the Saudis pockets. Trump is pushing to remove the sanctions on Russia, but facing resistance. This is a convenient plan B to get revenue to Putin.

... it's more than likely both. Along with anything else of value they can steal and monetize. Trump is a malignancy that must be excised, one way or another, before America crumbles beyond saving.
I've been watching his clown show for more than 40 years, and I'm hard pressed to think of any sick, evil, and depraved creature more despicable than Donald Trump. His death will be a relief to the entire world.

that we've sanctioned shipments of oil to Russia? So the argument is that we have the right to intercept any shipment between any two parties, whether or not they've agreed to abide by the sanctions or any war's actually been declared, merely because we've unilaterally declared sanctions on one of them?

Two days ago, I filled my tank for 2.27 per gallon, which is 30 cents cheaper per gallon than at any other station in the area for miles around. That's because the station I stopped at gets their gas from Venezuelan oil refiners. Venezuela sells their oil at a cheaper price than other oil suppliers, and so the other oil suppliers want to get rid of them. TSF is simply doing Big Oil's bidding.....

... The United States continues to import low-enriched uranium from Russia, which is a key feedstock for producing nuclear reactor fuel. This trade takes place despite mutual restrictions: a US import embargo (in force since May 2024) and a Russian export ban (since November 2024). It remains possible due to one-off permits issued by both sides.
From Russia’s perspective, the lack of actual enforcement of the embargo on supplies to the US underscores the importance of Rosatom and its subsidiaries. Since 2022, the Russian authorities have refrained from using uranium deliveries as a political instrument and have allowed continued cooperation even with countries deemed hostile by the Kremlin – with the United States being the prime example.
This suggests that, for Moscow, maintaining Rosatom’s standing in a key market and preserving its reputation as a reliable supplier are of critical value, as they facilitate operations in other countries. This is particularly significant in the context of bidding for contracts to construct nuclear power plants abroad – projects that create long-term ties between the host country and Russian state-owned companies, thereby deepening multidimensional dependency on Russia. ...

Russia sold oil without using dollars. Well, they're too big, besides, they own 47. Venezuela is selling oil to China, using their currency. Stay tuned....

It’s been hiding in Venezuelan harbors and sprinting to China, evading EU, British and US navy forces (probably aided by Russian govt satellite navigation). The international community has been working together to try to capture it.

If it’s that ship, very understandable that it was seized.

We’ll see.

Oh, we *seized* the oil tanker? We didn't blow it to smithereens and kill everyone on board like we do with fishing vessels a fraction of the size?

Interdiction has *always* been possible, but the bloodthirsty sociopaths in Trump II choose violence so they can feel like real men and get clicks.
