NJ-11: 32BJ SEIU backs Mejia for special election
Its another day, another major union endorsement for Analilia Mejias campaign for New Jerseys 11th congressional district this time from the property services union 32BJ SEIU, which represents more than 15,000 New Jersey security officers, janitors, and airport and cafeteria workers.
Mejia, who is best known for her stint holding a top role on Bernie Sanderss 2020 presidential campaign, spent an earlier part of her career as a labor organizer, including three years as 32BJ SEIUs political director in New Jersey.
As the daughter of immigrants, a former 32BJ political director, and a lifelong union and grassroots organizer, [Mejia] knows firsthand what working people are up against, because shes lived it, 32BJ SEIU state director Ana Maria Hill said in a statement. Shes delivered real victories, from the fight for a $15 minimum wage to expanding paid sick leave in New Jersey. Our members chose to support her because they trust shell bring that same courage and commitment to Congress.
The endorsement represents a continued consolidation of the states most progressive unions behind Mejia; she had previously gotten backing from the SEIU State Council and the Communications Workers of America Local 1037.
