trump is doing his best to kill tourism in the US.
The Felon-in-Chief has already cut tourism in half, now he's going to kill it altogether.

'Death knell': Internet blasts Trump for 'decimating' tourism with social media crackdown

Under the new rule, international travelers would have to provide their social media history over the last five years, The Guardian reported.....
"If you want to ban foreign tourism, just say so. Don't demand that tourists prove they've never criticized the Dear Leader like some creepy Maoist cult. Oh, and good luck with the 2026 World Cup, or ever getting the Olympics or another international event here again," Brookings Institute fellow Jessica Riedl wrote on X.
"The Trump administration plans to require all foreign tourists to provide their social media histories from the last five years to enter the country. Yes, I said TOURISTS not immigrants. This is insane. It will DECIMATE the U.S. tourism industry," Jon Cooper, majority leader of Suffolk County legislature and former Long Island campaign chair for Barack Obama, wrote on X.
"Yeah this is the death knell for tourism. It doesnt matter if it passes or not. It scares people. And thats enough. People don't want to be scared on vacation," Gabrielle Ferry, founder of The Thurman Perry Foundation, wrote on X.

(91,647 posts)"Buckle up, US airlines, hotels, hospitality companies, places like NY, Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Hawaii. Market share will shift to places that welcome tourists," pollster and strategist Bruce Anderson wrote on X.
"Oh the irony! Especially given their rhetoric on 'free speech' vis a vis Europe. Incidentally this is something we often believe China is doing but that's not true at all: I researched it and there's never been a case of a tourist stopped at the Chinese border for what they posted on social media (they don't ask, don't check and don't care). So we're now in a world where the US ironically might have the singlemost restrictive policy on free speech in the world when it comes to this," entrepreneur Arnaud Bertrand wrote on X.
"BREAKING: The tourism industry is COLLAPSING because of Trump," Spencer Hakimian, founder of Tolou Capital Management, wrote on X.

(1,360 posts)Tourism is way off in Florida & Vegas already.......especially for Canadians and Europeans coming over here......
And the ski resorts in Colorado were already hurting, and it will get much worse if we don't get some snow in the mountains.....
(If the snowpack doesn't improve drastically....Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Southern California's water supply is going to be really hurting.)

To visit a country where they are not welcome.
Eff that shit.

(6,091 posts)Apart from the more obvious issues, how would one actually provide such information and who would check it all (AI??)?
Does DU for instance count as "social media"? Would I have to provide a copy of all my posts to DU?
I'm finding it hard to take this seriously. It is more likely another example of Trump firing another WMD (Weapon of Mass Distraction).

(335 posts)They think if the tourists are scared away then Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Vegas, and other big successful cities that they hate will suffer just like they thought the Epstein files would be all about Bill Clinton, Tom Hanks, Bill Gates etc. not Trump or Bannon. They dont even consider what the revenue loss from businesses in parts of the country outside of their Christian Nazi towns will do to local economies and the tax base. All they care about is Trumps policies are hurting people they dont like.

(14,984 posts)Wilderness tourism is a big thing in a lot of red states.
And the flyover regions depend on a reasonably healthy economy subsidized by both international goodwill and tourist revenue from destination cities and regions to keep their welfare dollars coming in.
Otherwise, it's "how we going to pay our taxes and keep the farm or homestead when Social Security goes bust, the subsidies and easy loans dry up, and all the good paying local Federal or State jobs disappear?"...
Your small town is going to be auctioned off for pennies and your homes foreclosed on and posted against squatters because some international Tech Bro or out of state RNJ hedge fund/Mafia group now owns your "legislatures" and your ass.
Enjoy living in your broke down RV or car and tent parked down by a river or along the side of a rural highway for as long as you can scavenge food and water. Or until the boss-man runs you off his hunting and fishing lodge compound.

(4,236 posts)When their businesses or farms go belly up they just 'win' more from the government in the form of undeserved and unearned SOCIALISM (ie grants, bailouts, subsidies, welfare, tax refunds, tax exemptions, forgiven bankrupties, etc. etc. etc.)
The red states are so F'ing stupid, they can't equate one with the other, and have no clue that Blue States have been carrying them all along. When the Blue States stop being able to carry them, because our economies are killed too, they will be in MUCH WORSE SHAPE.
Dems need FAR better messaging, to make even a dent in the pathetically ignorant world-view in magaland.

(8,617 posts)If implemented, it's going to cost us over 100 billion dollars a year, and have a negative impact on all 50 states.
Not many foreigners would risk having something on social media that would result in them being "detained", or refused entry.
Considering both direct and indirect workers, it would result in well over a million jobs being lost.
Just like with farmer communities, there are a lot of support businesses that provide goods and services to the tourism industry. They're also going to take a big hit.
Trump is bound and determined to turn the US into a shit hole country.
SpankMe
(3,650 posts)It's the totalitarian brutalism and free speech violation that should be the focus. That any criticism of Trump, MAGA or anything else Dear Leader see's fit disqualifies one from entering the US should be combatted from every quarter. This is just a stepping stone to doing this to US citizens in-country. SCOTUS would find in the Orange Asshole's favor should he do this to US citizens.
SpankMe
(3,650 posts)Another thing - this could cause foreign countries to retaliate by doing the same to Americans traveling abroad. This could result in danger to US citizens if they criticize Israel or Chinese leaders, or other leaders where criticism of, say the monarch, is criminalized like in Thailand and Saudi Arabia.
Remember - they literally sawed Jamal Khashoggi apart for criticizing Saudi royalty and society. Who's to say they wouldn't arrest a US citizen upon entry to, say, Thailand upon review of critical social media posts.

(10,464 posts)a horrible idea, I have a hard time believing this will ever happen. How would it even work? How does one go about "providing" the their last five years of social media? Assuming this is doable, then what. There are thousands of people hired to read people's Facebook, Tiktok, and whatever else? With people who can speak every known language? You'd need a whole new infrastructure to carry it out.

We visited the US way back in 1988, no red tape that I can remember.

(173,911 posts)It's not just social media. Looks like visitors to the US from Europe and other countries that are part of the visa waiver program will have to submit an enormous amount of data about themselves and their families, including DNA, if proposed new rules are accepted
