(565 posts)Heard it was linked to Iran smuggling. Iran has its own oil so why would they need a tanker full of Venezuelan oil.

(15,404 posts)Technically, it was legal. Unlike shooting fishermen in small boats suspected of drug smuggling.
Hell, navies, including ours, still don't shoot fishermen/suspected pirates off the Horn of Africa until they're clearly identified as being pirates.

(15,404 posts)Just as Russian oil and tankers are being sanctioned for their attack on Ukraine.
All that being said, Iran does have the right to protest the seizure and will probably get its ship back.
It's political posturing to hurt the Venezuelan government. And it's generally recognized as being a technically legal way to do so.
Honestly, I'm just waiting for the time it will be used against us.
Give the rest of the world three or four years, if they can hold onto their own economic tatters when we Hindenburg our way into a collapse worse than that of the Soviet Union when it broke apart.
Ya, it's technically legal. Unlike blowing up small boats with fishermen on them because the head of your military is either on a bender or is a dry drunk.

(60,189 posts)The USA used to contribute military aid to stop Somali pirates from seizing oil tankers whose route took them near Somali waters. We used to open fire on pirates that did the same thing we just did.

(46,143 posts)The seizure warrant was issued by Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui of the US District Court for the District of Columbia, Faruqui was appointed as a magistrate judge in 2020. Magistrate Judges are selected by the active judges on the court -- at the time of his appointment, there were 14 active judges on the court, 10 appointed by Clinton or Obama, four by Trump.
