Bari Weiss/Erika Kirk "Town Hall" Promos on CBS

Around CBS news programming, they're running promo ads touting the "Town Hall" featuring Erika Kirk and hosted by new CBS Editor in Chief Bari Weiss.

Having watched the promo several times now, it's clear to me that this will not be any sort of unbiased event. The promos include teary-eyed acting by Kirk and sympathetic questioning by Weiss.

This bodes very badly for all of CBS News. Combined with the announcement of Tony Dokoupil's takeover of the CBS Evening News, it demonstrates a new, heavily conservative lean for CBS News that is pretty frightening.

Looks like I'm going to be switching to another network for my evening news half hour.

This is some ugly shit, my friends. See the teaser on YouTube:

in public, don’t be in public. Go home and grieve.

This is very egregious by CBS. Trying to show their fealty right out of the gate.

This is going to be about as bogus as it comes. It will not turn out well for CBS. They're already #3 in ratings for broadcast network national news. This is going to send them off-the-chart lower. Pure bias on display.

Walter Cronkite is going to rise from the dead over this crap.

grade D acting. Worst thing about it is bringing her three year old daughter into it as a grief sledgehammer.

And one has to question MS NOW too with Tur on all afternoon. Will the Trump group be feeding both Katy and Tony feel good stories about Dozing Don for them to broadcast? Probably already happening.

and really just an arm of Naval Intelligence. Like CNN is an agent for the CIA.

I have been a journalist for decades and have observed these issues and factish trails closely. No one will be able to prove these theories (I didn't invent them--crawl into the Mockingbird rabbithole and discover this conspiracy for yourself.) I'm convinced.

So CBS? Not a surprise they are bending the knee.

Asked of Kirk's wife, it was never going to lead to a serious discussion of the impact of hate rhetoric including that on the right. It also subtly set up the idea that many people on the left were happy or " thought he had it coming".

Anyone reading DU that day would have seen a mix of reactions. The main one was that the right would make him a blameless martyr and the blame for his death would be assigned to us.

It ignores that the motive of the man, raised in a very red, gun loving family was Kirk's hateful rhetoric against the shooter's partner. That rhetoric was not as Weiss described it just something he disagreed with, but rhetoric driving actions including legislation that harmed trans people.

I agree that I do not expect Weiss in later questions to address that, especially as it would be unseemly to ask those questions of a crying widow. Instead, the question may be whether she is exploiting his widow or, more likely, giving her a platform. Either way, I doubt it will be a serious effort to look at the danger of the increasing political hate speech.

If Weiss were interested in questioning the increase in partisan hatred, the way to question it is not an interview with the widow of a murdered man who used hate speech against others.
