What we know
An active shooter was reported on or near the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the university’s public safety department said this afternoon.
Multiple people have been shot in the area of the university, Providence police said.
There is no suspect in custody, the university said in an updated alert this afternoon. It had earlier said that one person was in custody.
The university said on its Emergency Information website that the shooter is near the Barus & Holley engineering building. The alert instructed people to lock their doors, silence their phones and stay safe.
The student newspaper, The Brown Daily Herald, reported that an alert and call went out to students about the incident.

I live just across the river from the campus. I spent a lot of time on that street in the 80s. Saturday night it was pretty busy. They still havent caught the shooter. Every single politician who sends thoughts and prayers needs a boot up their ass!
