Clergy abuse report details allegations against dozens of Grand Rapids-area priests
At least 51 priests have been accused of sexual misconduct in the Diocese of Grand Rapids since 1950, according to a new report stemming from a seven-year investigation into Catholic Church clergy abuse in Michigan by Attorney General Dana Nessel's office.
Of the 51 accused, none are still involved in active ministry within the diocese; 37 are believed to be dead, and 14 are still living. Two were convicted of criminal sexual conduct and assault and battery, respectively, prior to the investigation by the attorney general's office.
"By publishing these reports, we are sharing their stories and validating their experiences," Nessel said in a Monday virtual press conference announcing the report.
"Criminal prosecutions are just one accountability metric," the two-term attorney general added. "Ensuring each victim is heard regardless of how long ago their assault may have been is important in acknowledging their pain and fostering a culture that prioritizes these victims over their silence."
