"Whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect. Some people aren't going to like it, some people are going to like it less," Reid said on the Senate floor after the meeting with President Barack Obama, other top congressional leaders and senior administration officials.
Obama declared himself "modestly optimistic" that the Senate leaders can forge an agreement, but he warned that "nobody's going to get 100% of what they want."

The last time I heard Obama use the "nobody's going to get 100% of what they want." meme, was when Boner bragged he got 98% of what he wanted in the last budget negotiations.
I could be wrong, and I certainly hope I'm wrong, but if I was a betting man, I think the tax increase is going to be raised to those making more than 400k, and SS will be cut with chained CPI.

(12,530 posts)Take your "whining" accusations somewhere else. This is not a board for goddamned simpletons to get together and chant the President's name over and over again without a single thought in their heads beyond praising the President, but I swear, some posters here want to live in just such a moronic world. If you have something to say about the OP, say so. If you just want to hurl accusations with no basis, no possible way to contribute to the conversation, please try to understand that your input has no worth and you're not contributing to anything positive at all. Now you can go ahead and yell at me, but I've really lost all patience with those who insist that we don't do any thinking or engage in real discussion here. Rah fucking rah.

(1,589 posts)talk about a simplistic world? HA! apparently you and the OP think we live in a world where holding posting on an obscure message board is going to have any kind of affect on this world.
welcome to reality. the GOP controls the House. Legislation (remember those checks and balances things) cannot pass without passing a house vote. Period. So what that means in the REAL world? means not everyone will get a tax increase that deserves it. means we wont get all the cuts from DOD that we should have.
it also means - relevant to the 'debt crisis' or not, that SS and/or medicare will likley take a hit.
What Im sick of is all you people who 'know better' than the goddamn DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT, who actually lives this bullshit every day. I guarantee he'd love to make all of your 'progressive' dreams come true. But the we were unable to give him a democratic House. Its REALITY. DEAL. or start campaigning for 2014 and maybe he can have a year of actually getting shit done.
For some, reality is irrelevant unfortunately. That, and the notion that staying at home in 2010 sure taught the Dems a lesson.

Sadly, most of the people don't care one way or the other and even on DU we have some who are glad Obama compromises with the enemy.

(7,549 posts)I am hoping ABC is right and that whatever bill passes now will only address the tax issue and leave any discussions of spending cuts till later. That is what they are reporting would be the most likely scenario for Harry and Mchinless( stolen from Stephanie Miller lol) to agree to. Who knows if they are right

(36,392 posts)If we can get the top-level revenue hikes now, with NO spending cuts until whenever, I will heap praise on Obama, Reid, and Pelosi, and look forward to the next two years with great hope.

(594 posts)the Republicans voted against it. Would the meme then be that Obama tried to cut Social Security but the Republicans didn't allow it. That could happen. What Obama is counting on is once he does the chained CPI cut that people will simply forget about it in a few months. Not me, or anyone I know. Not so much because of the cut itself, which affects the poorest, the promise of a 20 year kickback notwithstanding, but that the cut would open the door to more cuts. Which could result in a recession for people thinking they're going starting cutting more. And because of that, my wallet will be closed because I know I will have to provide even more for my daughter who at 42 will get zilch when SS is turned to welfare.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)That cut has caused DU hair to burst into flames at least 6 or 7 times in the last 3 years.
plethoro
(594 posts)to tell you I was wrong and you were right should it not happen. I think the chained CPI is going to happen and I think another major hit will happen in the first quarter. But this latter one will not be agreed to by Democrats.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)I don't think Obama will agree to a chained CPI cut as part of a deal now ... and I don't see any reason to make additional cuts in 1Q.
I do suspect that the GOP will try to get cuts with the debt ceiling, but Obama has no reason to agree to them.
I think those who call for everyone to contact their representatives are right. That always makes sense. Yell at them.
What bugs me, is the endless series of threads which declare that Obama has as a primary goal, gutting these programs. I think its BS.

(22,541 posts)They aren't gonna agree on shit except extending unemployment, taxes for under $250,000, and payroll tax extension. That's it. Those 3 things are what Obama instructed Reid to put to a vote on the senate floor. Otherwise, the only thing they've agreed to is the bill the senate already passed.
Then, there are the 2 house bills Boehner sent over. They don't have chained CPI either. Nothing on offer has chained CPI in it. Boehner turned down that offer. It is off the table.
Obama led with his best offer last year. Every offer has gotten smaller. Once they've been turned down, they have not been offered again. They're dead. Off the table. Gone. Kaput. If this proves to be the exception to the rule I would be surprised. Because we are so close to getting what we want. Tax increases for over $250,000, unemployment insurance extension and payroll tax cut extension. Defense spending decreases. Then we make them bargain after the 3rd. We hold Defense spending hostage to the debt ceiling increase so they can't tank the economy.
mw
(1,312 posts)GOP would like to merely "extend" the cuts...so they can retain leverage for another, better politically, day.
PERMANENT tax cuts, or this whole debate is a Democratic debacle.

(10,789 posts)Actually, when it came down to the final tally, he got squat, and looked like a fool. That was at a time when he was supposed to be holding all the cards, and Planned Parenthood, NPR, Social Security and Medicare were all supposed to be on the table; he got nothing. That he came out and crowed about how well he did just demonstrates, to me, that he was completely out of his league.
...so the take-away there is don't listen to what the repugs say about whatever agreement we get, as playing them for fools is and easy trick. Look at what the actual agreement is.
Skraxx
(3,179 posts)He got nothing out of that deal. Worse than nothing. Obama chumped him an set him up, which is made obvious by the current dynamics.
