(7,653 posts)unless the constitution is amended. He wasn't born in the country.

(22,663 posts)Well...
Maybe if things get as bad as I think they might...entire systems and frameworks will be changed or overhauled.
Germany managed to rescue itself...maybe we can...who knows. In any case, things are going to take a long time.
Will things get so bad that a constitutional amendment is feasible? Maybe.
Because after Trump is gone, there's going to be another Trump. Only he's not going to be an asshole like trump, but he's going to be just as destructive.

(1,255 posts)cannot run for president because he does not meet the U.S. Constitution's requirement of being a natural-born citizen.

(29,929 posts)So I'm biased.
I don't feel their views are all that controversial though progressives/democratic socialists may take a position that maybe unpopular at the time but are accepted by the majority down the road. The obvious example is cannabis legalization which now a large portion of Republican voters support. It is like that with a lot of other issues.
I don't fear the label or fear it will be used against the party mainly because it was used unsuccessfully against Obama and Republicans tend to call anything good that the government spends money on as "socialist".
When Obama was first elected I felt that the sky was the limit. With the self-described Democratic Socialists I feel more hope but like SocialDemocrat said Mamdani cannot be President due to the fact he wasn't born here but Trump thinks he can run for a third term despite the constitution.

(4,522 posts)If he can dance with seniors at a senior center he's got my vote. I think he is real and hope I am right

(1,350 posts)Which predictions will become reality? Will he be more or less "socialist" than everyone thinks? What will be his FIRST major attempt to make changes? What will he do to increase the size of the police force? etc etc etc.
By this time next year we should have many answers.
But no, he couldn't become president. And not only because of the "born in Uganda" item. Because to think so ignores 70% of the population.

(29,929 posts)often say if he only accomplishes 10-30% of what he proposes it will still be a big step in the right direction.
As far as increasing the size of the police force I don't think that is the biggest issue but rather affordability which is what he ran on. He will still prioritize the focus on serious crimes and find other solutions to issues like homelessness and other issues rather than sending the cops at the issue.

(22,663 posts)I just watched a portion of his ignoration, and I've seen several interviews with him.
I think that if he ultimately performs as mayor, and if he were to aspire to the position, he could be president someday. I'm not sure if it can happen in many of our lifetimes, but maybe. (Edit: I just found out he was not born in the US....sorry. But my opinion on his characteristics, and what it would take to turn this country around, still stand).
He has beliefs that are controversial to many in this country, and he states those beliefs unapologetically. He answers questions directly and forcefully, with a smile. He is quick with his answers, which means he believes what he is saying.
I think what would have to happen...
This country is continuing to spiral downward, and honestly, I do not see that ending anytime soon. I think there will come a point where pretty much EVERYONE in this country is going to feel like they were kicked in the nuts, and it will be undeniable.
And if we get to that point, when EVERYONE has had enough because it has hurt them personally, then people will be ready. Perhaps when many of the old MAGATs start dying off. Maybe when everyone has someone in their family who died from lack of healthcare.
Epstein isn't going to changed the hearts of those locked in the bubble. Nothing will. Until they feel like they were fucked personally.
I thought it would clear up after President Biden. It didn't. One of the best, if not THE best president of my lifetime, and it didn't happen. A giant of a man. A kind soul. A good heart. A brilliant politician who accomplished great things...and it still didn't happen.
There will come a day when the words "democratic socialist" are not mocked, and that day might happen sooner than we think, if Mamdani unquestionably performs.
I had these same early feelings when I first knew of President Obama, but for different reasons.
I know many here will disagree with me, but this is how I feel at the moment.
One more thing...remember that Mamdani was able to charm the devil in the Oval Office. He made Trump look small. And he did it with a smile.
