Performing there has become charged and political, the 18-time Grammy winner said.
The celebrated banjo player Béla Fleck announced on Tuesday that he had withdrawn from three concerts at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, becoming the latest artist to forgo playing at the venue amid changes from the Trump administration.
Mr. Fleck, an 18-time Grammy Award winner, was scheduled to play with the National Symphony Orchestra in February. Several musicians have cut ties with the Kennedy Center since its board voted last month to add President Trumps name to the institution.
It has become less and less a musically and artistically based situation and more of a highly politicized and divisive one, Mr. Fleck said in a statement to The New York Times. This pushes against the deepest motivations of why I want to be a musician.
In a social media post announcing his withdrawal, Mr. Fleck said that performing at the Kennedy Center had become charged and political, at an institution where the focus should be on the music.

p.s. Bela is male
I confess I am not familiar with his work but I did guess his first name was Hungarian (because of Bela Lugosi!).....Mr. Fleck's wiki entry is very interesting:

Oh, heck -- how often do I get an excuse to post a Flecktones performance ?

(41,003 posts)I've been using the 'ampersand-semicolon' codes for years in the body of the post, but they just don't work in the OP. I have to correct something I said, though -- they used to be just blanked out in my browser (Firefox) but now I'm seeing them unconverted -- that is, the ampersand, semicolon and sandwiched text are there, just the way they were written. After the Election Night hack attack, the admins started filtering all special characters in the OP and some in the body of the text -- last I checked, you still can't use super and subscripts (very frustrating for posts in Science) but there have been a few (mostly very quiet) improvements, such as now seeing accents in responses.
Maybe you get other results in other browsers -- if so that would be useful info to share.
(BTW, the post you linked to shows an á just fine, so I doubt it's my browser. Try putting one in the OP of a new post and see what happens.)
In posting this, I was forcibly reminded of something -- if you preview the text, the accents in the title show up. If you post after previewing, they go away.
If you add the special characters and post immediately, they show up. I think they may also vanish if you edit/update the post. UPDATE: confirmed. They vanish from the headline, but not the body, on update.
ETA: I just removed the semicolons. Now I'm not seeing the accents in my own browser (Firefox on Mac). How about specifying what OS and browser you're viewing my posts with ? Because what seems to work for you (I *can* see the accent in the OP) doesn't seem to work for me (I can't *create* an accent in a new OP).

Actually, I'm going to check that to see if it works w/out the Preview mode in a minute, so I may need another update.
BTW, was there some widely circulated update re. all this that I missed ??

(41,003 posts)character conversion IN PREVIEW MODE -- which is actually something I'm glad to see, because it makes editing easier !! Next time I need to edit in HTML parens () in a URL I'll see if that is smoother now.
It's curious that the semicolon still functions as expected in Preview Mode, but not in posts. Maybe it makes sense in a way -- as in C programming and CLIs the ; closes a statement and the interpreter -- or whatever you call it -- takes it as an order to 'execute immediately', whereas leaving out the ; causes the conversion to be made only when other users' browsers read the text -- or something like that. I'm hardly a 6.3, so not my area of expertise, just sad experience.

(41,003 posts)It looks to me like there's two modes -- with and without a semicolon and they function differently. I've never seen that clarified anywhere, but I don't normally look for such things very hard. My programming and Web authoring skills are both minimalissimo.
