Sen. Fetterman: Greenland has 'massive strategic benefits' for U.S.

(WHTM) — U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) released a statement in response to the Trump administration’s calls to acquire Greenland.

"I believe Greenland has massive strategic benefits for the United States. I do not support taking it by force. America is not a bully. Ideally, we purchase it—similar to our purchases of Alaska or the Louisiana Purchase. Acquiring Greenland is a many decades old conversation."

The statement comes as the White House recently announced that the Trump administration is weighing “options” to take control of Greenland, an island rich in minerals and strategically well-located for U.S. interests. The White House even said Tuesday that the “U.S. military is always an option.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a joint statement alongside multiple European leaders in response to the Trump administration’s remarks, saying, “Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”

19. Yes, acquiring Greenland has been discussed in the past - and it was rejected repeatedly.

The acquisitions of Alaska and the Louisiana territory are not useful or accurate analogies. Russia sold Alaska to the US because it desperately needed money. Denmark doesn't need money. France sold the Louisiana territory, which it had not settled outside New Orleans, because Napoleon was unable to control the territory and feared renewed war with Britain. What the US actually bought was the preemptive right to obtain Native lands by treaty or by conquest, to the exclusion of Spain or France. They were not purchases of a self-governing entity that was an integral part of an allied country. Denmark doesn't want to sell Greenland and Greenlanders don't want to become Americans. That should end the discussion right there.

Hey, Fetterman, lots of people of German descent live in Pennsylvania, so, what if Germany wanted to buy Pennsylvania? Would you be OK with that?

our party has got to do some serious soul searching about how people like Sinema and Fetterman are slipping through the cracks into the Senate and undermining our own positions. We need to figure out how to ID and eliminate these people in the primary process.

Manchin, I mean, he drove us all insane, but that's the best you are getting past the voters in WV. But there is no reason senators like this should be slipping through in states like AZ and PA, and worse yet, if anyone like this ever got elected president then changed all their tunes once sworn in.
