In the days since the United States captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and seized control of his government, President Trump has threatened to use force in several other countries and territories as well: Greenland, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Iran.
But Americans say they would oppose U.S. military intervention in each of these places by wide margins, according to a new Yahoo/YouGov poll.
Trump has long speculated, for instance, about acquiring the massive, largely uninhabited Arctic island of Greenland. One way or the other, were going to have Greenland, Trump told reporters Sunday aboard Air Force One. If we dont do it the easy way, were going to do it the hard way, he vowed a few days earlier. Meanwhile, the White House has confirmed that utilizing the U.S. military is always an option there.
-snip-
Just 14% would favor U.S. forces intervening in Greenland; a full 62% say they would oppose it. Even Republicans are more likely to oppose (36%) than favor (32%) taking military action in Greenland.

(10,872 posts)And there's a full 20-25% answering "not sure" on these questions.
Actual support for invading Greenland clocked in at 14%.
A headline reading "Only 14% support invading Greenland" would've been much more reassuring.
I am now somewhat less disheartened by Americans.

(2,918 posts)Headlines and the first few paragraphs in articles are always written in the way most favorable way to Trump possible, allowing the regime's "spin" on everything to dominate the tops of articles, always with a credulous and deferential tone. And everyone who disagrees is a "critic" who "alleges" such and such, and the counter-argument first appears in like paragraph 5.
It's fucking infuriating.

(10,872 posts)The number of times I've seen a headline and opening paragraph heavily imply one thing only to discover the opposite is true in paragraph eight is bonkers.
Of course, it's intentional. The intent is to plant an image understanding full well that most people won't read that far.
To be fair, the OP did include the 14% part, and my brain got stuck on the 62%. That's when I realized I had to look at the actual poll to get full context.

(2,918 posts)I assumed you were criticizing Forbes for the headline, not the OP for using it in their own post. I rant about headlines all the time, but I consider the problem to lie with the publication, not a DU'er who quotes it verbatim

(23,412 posts)I'm somewhat encouraged by, "Just 14% would favor U.S. forces intervening in Greenland."
Edited to add: just saw your post above and I agree it would have been preferable if they'd chosen a headline highlighting that statistic.

More than 8 in 10 Americans are opposed to the U.S. taking over Greenland by military force as President Trump ramps up pressure on the semi-sovereign Danish territory, according to a new survey.
The Quinnipiac University poll, released Wednesday, found that 86 percent of respondents are against the U.S. using military force to acquire the Arctic island, which is part of NATO. Just 9 percent are in favor of such a move.
Meanwhile, 55 percent of respondents oppose the U.S. attempting to purchase Greenland, with 37 percent in support, according to the survey.
A Reuter's/Ipsos poll showed just 4% support for President Donald Trump to seize Greenland by military force. Only 17% of Americans approve of Trumps push for the US to acquire Greenland by any means.
