How Many Folks Here Have Shopped For "Print On Demand" Products?
[Trust me, there is a reason that I am posting in "General Discussion" instead of "The DU Lounge".]
I love the websites that allow artists to get their designs out to the public and provide personalized clothing and decor. I've bought cool sheets sets at Spoonflower, tote bags at Society6 and pillows and lampshades and more at Zazzle, Redbubble and CafePress. Oh, and you can believe me when I say that I ALWAYS wait for a sale.
Right now, at the Redbubble site, the keywords, "abolish ice" and "anti ice" are listed as trending searches, and I have mixed feelings. Of course, I am happy to see that particular sentiment filtering down through popular culture and public discourse all the way to consumer goods websites. The fact that people are shopping for t-shirts and tote bags that declare such a political position is comforting. It's good to know that there are so many people who share the belief that ICE's activities are wrong.
However, it seems a little discomfiting that people are channeling their anger and concern into product lines and consumer goods. Given that these companies tend to attract a younger demographic, I wonder if these young people feel that they have no other outlet for affecting change?
Mind you, I'm not criticizing anyone for wanting to own an accessory or decorating item that expresses their preferences or beliefs. How can I ? It's just that I don't think much will change if a bunch of people carry "Abolish ICE" tote bags or drink coffee from similarly-themed mugs.
