NEW: I'm told multiple ICE agents with rooms booked at the St. Paul Downtown Doubletree by Hilton received this notice today that their rooms are being cancelled & the hotel will temporarily close "due to heightened public safety concerns in St. Paul."
I called the hotel & checked online & they are indeed not taking any bookings right now.
They referred me to other hotels.
I'm told this also happened today at the Intercontinental St. Paul, with ICE agents with bookings there notified the hotel will be temporarily closing today due to the ongoing unrest in Minnesota. An agent who talked to the front desk manager there says he was told it was done to protect staff because they have been getting threats from unknown individuals for lodging DHS agents.

Please know that your safety and well-being will always be our top priority.
Due to heightened public safety concerns in St. Paul, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close our hotel, and your reservation will be canceled effective Sunday, January 18, 2026 by 12PM. We are taking this step out of care for you, our team members, and the surrounding community.
Due to your unexpected departure, our team can assist you with alternate accommodations if needed. To support you during this difficult transition and as a gesture of goodwill, we can either refund your last night's stay or pay your first night's stay at your new hotel at the same rate as your canceled reservation with us.
Thank you for understanding during this challenging time.
With warmest regards,
DoubleTree St. Paul Team

(129,431 posts)like maids, cleaners, kitchen staff, are immigrants. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a lot of Minneapolis/St.Paul hotels are understaffed because employees are afraid to come to work. If they knew ICE was staying there they'd almost certainly stay away. ICE snatched the employees of a Mexican restaurant in Willmar after finishing their meal where the employees served them. Can't get much lower than that.

(15,134 posts)This is as good as any way to kick ICE out of your hotel without attracting the ire of Hilton.
Another way is to claim you're understaffed - the staff all called in because even if they were citizens, they're afraid of being harassed - or arrested and sent away to Texas because DHS agents have been checking social media for potential protest supporters or family members, and claiming the documents of citizens and legal visa holders aren't legitimate.

(15,134 posts)That's very understandable. One cannot make money to pay rent if one is stuck in detention for not matching the color swatch or having an accent or speech impediment.
Anecdotal, of course, but over the past 40 years of work-related travel I've done, the majority of hotel staff is not lily-white.
