WASHINGTON — Roger Allers, the director, writer and animator for some of Disney's most classic animated films, has died. He was 76 years old.

Allers co-directed the original "The Lion King" alongside Rob Minkoff and also worked on Disney films "Aladdin," "The Emperor’s New Groove," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Brother Bear.

Snip

"Roger was an extraordinarily gifted artist and filmmaker, a true pillar of the Disney Animation renaissance," he wrote. "I had the privilege of being part of the crew with Roger on many films in the late ’80s and throughout the ’90s, and he was, without question, one of the kindest people you could hope to know and work alongside "

Bossert said Allers was traveling in Egypt in the last week before he "passed on to his next journey."
