Trump orders prison release of Arkansas congressman's son

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-orders-prison-release-arkansas-141333081.html

President Donald Trump has granted clemency to a Republican congressman's son who was in prison for distributing methamphetamine.

Trump commuted the federal sentence of James Phillip Womack, the son of Arkansas Rep. Steve Womack, on Thursday, Jan. 15, according to the official Executive Grant of Clemency signed by Trump and issued by the U.S. Department of Justice.

A White House official told USA TODAY that coupled with James Womack's record of good behavior in prison, the family has had several recent health issues, including his mother being diagnosed with abdominal cancer and his brother suffering from a seizure disorder and having difficulty living by himself.

The congressman’s son was sentenced in federal court in May 2024 to a $1,900 fine and eight years in prison for distributing more than five grams of methamphetamine, according to court record

Poor widdle James. Now maybe the Congressman will focus on the nation.

1. I want a potential next Dem President to hold onto this clemency and use it as precedent

If any federal inmate has a record of good behavior and demonstrates family difficulties, that is good enough reason to free them.

If I ruled the world
I'd free all my sons...

2. Trump is pretty soft on drug dealers. Is he afraid Jr might run out of coke if he really fights drugs?

5. As the article indicates, he was convicted in federal court - UPDATE

He previously was sentenced to 9 years in prison on state drug and gun charges. I haven't been able to determine the status of his imprisonment on those charges. While Trump cannot pardon or commute that sentence, the governor probably can and will, if she hasn't already.

UPDATE: Since Womack was sentenced to 9 years in 2019 but was not in prison when he was arrested on federal charges in 2022, presumably something or someone intervened that resulted in his release from, or not having to serve, his state crime sentence.

The governor of Arkansas is a woman, famously Trump's former Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
