I have a subscription to a French newspaper (my hometown), and today there is an article about the fact that the French automaker Renault is going to start producing military drones in two of its factories.
https://www.ouest-france.fr/economie/entreprises/renault/renault-va-produire-des-drones-aeriens-militaires-dans-des-usines-francaises-35548f8e-f557-11f0-9160-764ed90b3d12
The goal is to ramp up production to help Ukraine, while also modernizing French defense capabilities with modern military drones.
Trump is stimulating the European military industrial complex. Europe is also seeking alternative trade deals with the rest of the world, seeking to disengage from the United States.
Trump, true to himself, will manage to tank our country like he tanked every business he has run, including casinos.
In a decade from now, Europe will rival the US in terms of military power. They already are on our footing economically if they band together.

It reminds me of when we saw a photo of Tim Walz petting someone's cat, and we realized that we couldn't imagine Trump petting an animal.

(1,278 posts)But if we invade Greenland, which will also activate Canada under NATO, then I think we could definitely be facing invasion from Europe.
Here's the thing though- tons of civilians and US vets would help European forces bring the administration down.

(3,808 posts)Planes, tanks, nukes....This isn't like Civil War days when a guy with a gun could make a difference.
Also, Europe would be fighting a US/Russia alliance. I don't see a military solution.
But Russia is economically weak, and under Trump we may become so. Europe could win the economic war, impose sanctions, etc.
A Republican regime won't survive that.

Somehow, it was plain to my ear, but apparently I was obtuse. Thanks for drawing my attention to my error.
Its a travesty that we even have to have this, and all the other discussions were forced to have.

(31,974 posts)Estimates of the prevalence of psychopathy vary depending on the measure used to assess it, and on the population being assessed. Because psychopathy is a spectrum disorder, prevalence estimates also vary depending on the cutoff that researchers use.
Approximately 70% of the population is estimated to have no psychopathic traits whatsoever. The remaining 30% have low, medium, or high levels of psychopathy
Psychopathy affects all ethnic, cultural, racial, and socioeconomic groups.

(2,370 posts)Looking at the Ukraine war, we see that Russia, like the US, is locked into a vision of warfare that was outdated 50 years ago. Ukraine is using modern drone technology in a way that has a 100:1 advantage in terms of cost and effectiveness. It is noteworthy that Europe is scaling up production of drones while Trump is still thinking in terms of battleships and billion dollar fighter jets.

(3,016 posts)Ive been saying this for a while: Too many strategic planners are making preparations for winning the last war. Large ships (from destroyers up to and including carriers) have been obsolete ever since the Brits lost the Hermes and the ineptly named Invincible during the Falkland war.
Now (relatively) cheap drones can do the same thing, and even low value targets are on the table. A nation with a relatively small budget doesnt have to spend hundreds of of millions on developing or buying advanced missiles systems.

(2,856 posts)All the military bases will be covered in swarms of drones, effectively closing the field. cratering if necessary to make sure. Only cargo planes leaving full and arriving empty are allowed.
Ask Putin how you can beat a drone assault. Good luck!
Next are the air tankers. Without them there is no attack. Give them a hostile escort out of NATO airspace.
Sell some securities to help chump crater our economy. I support anything you do to hurt this wayward country.

(1,325 posts)They have a lot of major hurdles to get past to match US military or tech supremacy in any way.
Even Europeans would admit they put themselves in this spot. They should have been smarter in realizing they couldnt always rely on the US for their security.
They sat around getting insulted by the likes of Rumsfeld when the US invaded Iraq. Then they continued importing almost all of their natural gas from Russia. Now theyre hopelessly dependent on the US for natural gas (which is probably a weapon Trump will use, just like Putin did a few years ago). Hes a sociopath and wouldnt care that its winter and people could freeze.
On the positive side, they have invested more in their militaries since 2022. Their defense stocks reflect that.
I hope Im wrong though and I hope they use all the leverage they have now to force trump to back down. NATO in its current form is likely dead, but a stronger EU military force would be positive step forward for the continent and the world. As we know now, the US is definitely not a force for good globally and for their own sake, I hope other countries are slow and skeptical in trusting the US after this current nightmare is over.

(2,471 posts)Europe would require a long term commitment, spending, and recruitment to hope to reach parity with the US. I am not convinced they wont just slow down or reverse course 2 or 3 years from now, especially after they see the price tag required to do it.
