MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The topic of gas-powered turbines became a major point of contention last year in Memphis, and now Elon Musk’s plans to bring 41 turbines to the facility in Southaven.

It was back in August of last year when Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite announced that the former Duke Energy facility, located on Stanton Road, would be used to power xAI.

This location is just south of xAI’s supercomputers, “Colossus One and Two” in Memphis.

Desoto County and Shelby County already have failing air quality standards for ozone, per the American Lung Association,” said Shannon Samsa, founder of Safe and Sound Coalition. “I think it’s irresponsible to add more pollution in such a suburban, populated area with so many children around and churches in the homes and schools."
