California Republicans ask Supreme Court to block new House map

California Republicans are requesting the Supreme Court block a new Democratic-favored House map from going into effect ahead of the November elections.

The California GOP is appealing a decision made by a lower court last week that blocked Republicans’ bid to stop a new set of congressional lines from being put in place for the midterms. The map, which was approved by voters in November, would offer Democrats up to five pickup opportunities.

Republicans allege that Democrats created the map as an illegal racial gerrymander that maximized Latino voting power instead of for partisan intent, an argument the federal court rejected last week.

Republicans want the high court to issue a ruling by Feb. 9 on their request to have the new Democratic-favored House map paused for the 2026 cycle. If that were to happen, the state would go back to its original map for November while the larger questions concerning the redistricting ballot measure work their way through the courts.
