Gerrymandered election map opponents in NC drop their lawsuit

Voting rights groups and individual voters have dropped their lawsuit against North Carolina’s redrawn 1st Congressional District.

In a Friday court filing, the N.C. NAACP, Common Cause North Carolina, and individual voters who challenged the new district lines dismissed their claims.

The map’s critics had sued, saying the plan discriminated against Black voters and retaliated against them for opposing a previous district map.

They had wanted a panel of federal judges to prevent the state from using the new 1st Congressional District that Republican legislators approved to help their party win another seat in the U.S. House.
